no offense sweetie, but your uncle is full of sh*t. NASCAR fans go to races because we love the intense competition, the speed and power of the cars, and the great personalities involved. the same reasons football and baseball fans follow those sports. how the hell would your uncle know what's in the hearts and minds of 75% of race fans? is he God?
crashes ar just a part of the sport, the way big hits and injuries are a part of football. but they are NOT the reason race fans watch racing. anyone who says they are knows nothing about NASCAR or it's fans.
to the phony stewart fan below me: bite me loser

Sorry, your uncle is wrong. There are people who like to see the wrecks but not the true NASCAR fans. At those speeds & being so close together it's awesome to see how well those guys handle those cars. If there is a wreck, people stand up to watch, but it's not for the thrill of a wreck. It's for fear of the drivers being hurt. There have been some real bad wrecks & it, amazing how those drivers walk away from a destroyed car with no serious injuries. Ever since we lost Dale Sr. there have been so many safety issues added but what a price to pay. Anyone who likes to see the wrecks are probably the same people who slow down on the Interstate when they drive by a bad wreck. That's just wrong.

Hey Will, does that mean that I can only believe 10% of what you just wrote? Ha ha ha.....just giving you a hard time.
While wrecks (and the risk of wrecks) do add to the excitement factor, I would have to disagree with your Uncle. Wrecks will definitely get the attention of the fans, but I have a hard time believing that real fans go just to see wrecks. Wrecks can cause injuries, and they also take away from green flag racing.
Wrecks at short tracks are intersting to watch, as many are caused by tempers flaring. But watching "the big one" honestly scares the heck out of me. I am always yelling at the TV for the driver to "put his net down" after a wreck so that I'll know he's OK.
I'll never forget that wreck several years ago (Talladega or Daytona....can't remember which) when Dale Jr. and Steve Park were both involved. Watching Dale Jr. sprinting across the grass to check on Steve gave me a new level of respect for him.

That's not why I watch racing, but I will admit it does make the race a bit more heart pounding when it happens. Some times the wrecks can be a thing of magnificence especially when you see a car fly and tumble through the air and then smack down hard, you hold your breath and then exhale a big sigh of relief mixed with a nervous laugh when you see the driver climb out of the car with not even a scratch on him.
It's a part of the sport that is undeniably exciting but I love the strategy between the driver and crew chiefs, to me the gambles they take are more electrifying especially when they pay off!
Man I can't wait till February!!!!

When I go to a Nascar race I normally watch the leader or my pick for the race and seldom see the first of a wreck, but I do remember thinking I hope my wife taped it so I can see who, what caused it when I get home when your there you don`t get any kind of a replay..
And If everyone would be honest about the situation
they feel the same way

People like wrecks in auto racing for the same reason people like professional wrestling. They're bloodthirsty. They can't enjoy pure sports. I wonder if these folks would find the hazards of racing so entertaining if they were forced to compete themselves.

Wrecks are just part of the game. I never want to see anyone get hurt (The season #3 died was horrible! I could barely watch at all), but it's fascinating to me that some of the wrecks can be so intense and nobody get hurt. It makes you realize how close everyone is at each moment to getting hurt.
As for your uncle's comments, I think a few probably watch FOR the wrecks, but unless they're true fans of racing, they would get too bored if they're only there for the wrecks--too unpredictable.
P.S. The wrecks in Indy car racing is CRAZY, with cars flying around and skidding on their tops.

They have nothing better to do.
Die-Hard Nascar fans like me go to see our favorite driver try to beat jeff gordon or jimmie johnson. Wrecks are fun to watch but the racing action is what really makes the adrenaline of the drivers and fans.

I don't watch for the wrecks, I enjoy seeing how close the cars come to wrecking. I don't think the main reason people go to see the race(s) live is for the wrecks. I think your uncle was pulling your leg.

Who do people like Jerry Springer? dude maybe your uncle is a little sarcastic. Don't believe what people say for percentage statistics. He didn't take a survey of all the NASCAR fans did he. I would say about 4% of the people who watch NASCAR, watch it for the wrecks. Because the way I look at it 80% of the people on this planet are mentally unstable. 20% have mental deficiencies which interupt with their lives. 10% of people suffer sever psychosis. And out of those people, even "whackos" like to watch NASCAR. And the people sick enough to watch a race to see a crash, that would be about 4% of the people. I would hope it would be less, because after all, these are people who walk amongst us, and that's a frightening thought.

First off that guy that answered before me should calm down and grow up. Anyways....Im not sure if your uncle is correct, but maybe he is saying 75 percent of the people that go to races like seeing wrecks, not just to see the wrecks, but that they enjoy to see em. Because I dont think 75 percent of us fans go just for the wrecks, that would be a waste of money lol. But, people like to see wrecks because its very exciting and its crazy lol. Ok well cya...Go Stewart #20
