I just completed my first semester of college as a freshman and I didn't do so well.
I had 4 classes and got a GPA of 2.5, next semester I'm taking 4 more classes. What grade would i need to get to get a GPA of 3, and 3.5. Thanks.

This is basically an algebra-type problem.

Let's say you want an average GPA of 3.0 over 8 classes (4 from last semester plus 4 coming up). That means you need 8 times 3.0 or 24 "points" in total. (You need 24 of these "points" so that when you divide the total number by the number of classes--8--you get an average of 3.0.)

You already have some points. With 4 classes and a GPA of 2.5, you have 4 times 2.5 points or a total of 10 points. Since you need to have 24 points to reach your goal, you need 14 more this semester. You will have 4 classes, so you divide 14 by 4 to get the GPA you need for the second semester (3.5). And that means you need two A's and two B's next semester to get a 3.5 GPA for the second semester and a 3.0 for the whole year.

What if you wanted to average 3.5 for the whole year? You would need to get a total of 3.5 times 8 points, or 28 points. Subtract the 10 you already have, and you would need to get 18 points in the second semester. But with only 4 classes, you would need to get a second-semester GPA of 4.5 (18 divided by 4).

Unless your school has A+ grades that count more than 4.0, you can't do that. So it will take more than one semester to bring your overall average up that high.

I hope this helps. Good luck!!

Do not think along those lines./ Do the best that you can in each course. No one can fault you for that.
