I have read about guitar wristbands recently to support my wrist.
My wrist pain has just started and I'm a year into guitar.

Are wristbands any use?
are there any other ways to help the pain?
I have heard of guitar excercises to help muscles, but I don't seem to know where to find them

Sometimes special wristbands called splints can be helpful to wrist pain such as if carpal tunnel syndrome is occurring. Also, sometimes special exercises can be of help. I would recommend talking to your doctor about maybe consulting a physical therapist to see if they can be of further help in easing this pain.

That is actually called tendonitis or RSI (repetitive stress injury). It can occur in the wrist, fingertips, thumb with guitarists. You need to stop playing guitar and let your wrist tendons heal.

Give guitar a rest for about a week to a month.

When you do pick up the guitar again from now on *always* stretch your hands before playing and you will never have this problem again.

Stretch #1: Hold hand out like you are saying 'stop!'. Make sure your arm is straight and elbow locked. Take other hand and gently bend fingers and hand back (toward shoulder). Hold 10 sec repeat 2-3 times

Stretch #2: Stretch your thumb by pushing/pulling it back w/ other hand. Hold 10 sec repeat 2-3 times.

Other tips: Drink water! This will help. Magnesium suppliments are supposed to be good for tendons and ligaments. Apply ice on a regular basis to the area of pain and wear a wrist splint for a few weeks. For pain relief use an anti-inflamitory drug such as Alieve.
