Why are the Baptists such teetotalers? Thats so lame. Jesus himself liked booze

Bill Leonard, dean of Wake Forest Divinity School, said many Baptist churches served real wine when observing the Lord's Supper late into the 19th century. "I know for a fact that First Baptist Church [of] Savannah, Ga., in particular, used wine for communion until" the 18th Amendment, which instituted Prohibition nationwide, went into effect in 1920, he said

It remains a personal choice. The Bible is against drunkenness not drinking in moderation.

Jesus first recorded miracle was turning water into fine wine. Those at the wedding feast chided the owner for keeping the best wine until last. It was and still is common practice for party givers to present the best wine first and lesser wine later when the taste buds are dulled. These wedding celebrants knew what good and bad wines were.

Paul knew Timothy had a bad stomach. In the area he was traveling to, the water was not to well for him. He told him to take a little wine for his stomach's sake. (1Timothy 5:23)

Some have commented on wine not being fermented. How? They did not have the ability to keep grape juice from turning to wine. They all knew the difference. Wine meant wine. Grape juice meant grape juice. Putting the juice in wine skins allowed fermentation.

So it is moderation in all things that matter. Giving self-control away is what is considered the sin.

Nonsensical? I'm a Southern Baptist hon, why don't you ask instead of accuse.

My "objection" to alcohol is only what it says in the Bible "do not be like the drunk". I drink wine on occasion with a meal, I've been known to sip a vodka and juice on a relaxing night. I don't drink and drive anywhere, ever, I don't go out clubbing at bars, I don't get so drunk I throw up and have a hangover. It's called being responsible.

Exactly what is so nonsensical about that?

Most Baptists feel they should remain above even the appearance of sinful actions. As a beer after work never hurt anybody, but someone on the verge of making a decsion on attending a church service or asking his church going neighbor questions, but sees him come out of a bar. Now thinks he is a hypocrite, and never does go to church. We as the saved of the world should not be the reason why the unsaved do not get saved.

It is clear from Proverbs 31:6 that the Almighty gave us alcohol for medicinal purposes. Using medicine for recreation is at best a bad idea. I am told that "wine" refers both to fermented and to not fermented grape juice, so you are begging the question in claiming that it was fermented.

and why are you so opposed to their opposition? If one choose to abstain, what is that to you? If a church or a denomination feels it is better to abstain, why does that bother you?

Different churches, different groups have differences about wine, mode of baptism, type of church government, and about a billion other things.....

god bless
