No need to frame it.

Stretched canvases can easily be framed. If you are going to do so, do NOT remove the canvas from the stretcher: that is meant to be permanent, not just a temporary "holder" for the canvas as you paint. Any framer will be able to show you a selection of the frames with the right depth for holding stretched paintings.

On the other hand, if you don't want to frame it, you can paint the sides or just apply wood stripping (stained, varnished, or painted as appropriate). But these systems are usually used with very large paintings, which are large enough to be "complete" and to "fill" the wall by themselves. For smaller and medium-sized paintings (and I believe A2 could be considered more or less medium-sized: about 42x59 cm, right?), a frame is generally needed. The person you give it to will be able to choose an appropriate frame to his or her liking.

ok i have never heard of an A2 sized canvas, but ill tell you what i know. you dont have to frame a painting on streched canvas, but if the sides are not painted its better to frame it. in order to frame it, you need to purchase a streched canvas frame for the size you want. but you will need to measure it in inches to find the right size. oil paintings are not to be framed behind glass because oil paint is fragile and needs to be open to the air. DO NOT REMOVE THE STRECHER BARS this will cause the painting to fall apart and to never be able to fit in a frame.

i hope you manage to get this to your friend.

Don't get rid of that! Leave it there! It would be best to give the painting as is and unframed so the receiver can take it to a frame shop and pick out his or her own frame.
