What is the American Medical Association? Are they made up of Doctors?

I am wondering becuase they seem to have a lot of influence in what is called a disease.

Why do they call alcoholism a disease? No other disease can be controlled or cured by abstinance. Lung Cancer cannot be cured by quitting smoking. Aids canot be cured by not having sex or any other STD. Skin cancer cannot be cured by staying out of the sun . Other diseases once we get it must be trreated to be cured or controlled.
