They are caused by a virus that lays dormant in the body and erupts every so often. Can be brought on by too much citric acid and the ingredient in toothpaste called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. There are toothpastes out there without this foaming agent and they help me.

They are usually the eruption of some minor infection in your body.
Brush and mouthwash with Hydrogen Peroxide twice daily and they will go away. If you use it a couple of times a week from now on, you will rarely ever get them.
