Exercise your 2nd Amendment before it's taken away, which is not far from happening if anyone but Ron Paul gets elected. The 2nd Amendment is the protector of other freedoms, and would definitely be one of the first casualties of martial law, which would be the government's answer to civil turmoil. You don't have to be a gun nut. Think of it as "insurance". Just lock it away, and feel a little more comfortable that if push comes to shove, you will be a freedom loving citizen, and not a subject.

Wolrdwide oil consumption will continue to increase and the supply chain is not expanding to keep pace. This means that prices will continue to escalate. Nations requiring oil will take economic and political measures to help ensure a supply for their citizens. Iraq was probably the first modern oil war intended to entrench US oil companies there.
When China, which owns half the US national debt, requires more oil, it may well stop purchaing US bonds in an attempt to curtail much of US foreign spending, including future oil wars. (The US is already the world's biggest debtor nation.)
The likey effects of worldwide oil competition in the US may well be hyper-inflation as the government prints money to keep up the appearance of a superpower and ensure oil for its economy.
In the mean time, alternative measures are being developed to reduce the effects of oil competition. These measures include:
- Alternatie automotive fuels like ethonol
- More fuel efficient cars
- Increased domestic oil exploration
- Increased refinery capacity
- New technology like hybrid electric/gas cars
- Development of wind and solor energy
In addition, more effective public transportation should be developed to reduce dependence on individual automobile transportation.
The best way to prepare for civil turmoil is to take measures to avoid it. Find jobs where you can work closer to home or use public transportation to get to your job. Build a home based business so you don't have to travel to a job.
If, or when, a real oil crunch comes, you will not be able to avoid the turmoil, no matter what you then do.

There will be little civil turmoil. By the time fuel gets way out there we will have put up with the higher prices like in europe and by then we'll be looking at alternative fuels anyways. So not too worry unless fuel suddenly takes a massive hike upwards in the near future.

The same questions were floated by paranoiacs in the early 1970's, when the price of gasoline doubled within weeks. Guess what ? We all survived, and there was no civil turmoil.
When gasoline gets too expensive for personal commuting, you will learn to share rides, telecommute, and a host of other solutions.

Now that alternatives to gasoline like Ethanol, Bio diesel , Natural gas , Propane or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and Hydrogen can be produced domestically from fossil fuels (such as coal), nuclear power, or renewable resources, such as hydro power., are being experimented it is hoped that a civil turmoil will not occur !!

The price increases will not be this dramatic and rapid.
The prices are mostly determent by traders.
When consumption drops because it is too expensive, so will the price because it is losing its value.
The price stays high as long as people are able to pay for it.

Stockpile non perishable supplies, batteries, etc. Might even consider deadbolts on all doors. Maybe a large(ish) generator. Just "brain" storming here, might consider a weapon of choice to protect against idiots.
