Cats have "things" that they insist doing. Knocking things off a shelf or table is another favorite. They just like to do it for whatever reason. It is not for reasons of play - after they knock something on the floor they look at it and find something else.

Is there a smell in the closet that the cat likes - that is possible?

Cats all have personalities, They also have the same basic instincts and behavior patterns. Some of them, like yours, develop, as do humans, these activities that we do not understand. To them, it makes sense.

By the way, does cat go into the cubboard? If so it is looking for a nest or, more properly a den.

By the way, Have you thought that the can is playing with you. Like a dog and fetch. You close the door, cat opens it. After the door is open, does cat sit and wait for you to close it? If so, it is a game and you are permanently "It".

By the way, as it ages it will stop this game and do something else.

It's normal. When my cat did this, we put a utensil like a spatula through the cabinet handles so it wouldn't open. She'll find something else to get into when it doesn't work. If the handles are knob shaped, try a rubber band to help keep them closed. You could always sprinkle a little hot sauce in the area too, if you can ignore the mess. Eventually, she'll stop messing with it.

I agree with above poster. Sounds like she's playing. You can buy child latches for the cupboard if it's bothering you that much, or you can distract her with another game.

To a cat, it's new, both my cats open random things after i close them. But otherwise, it's dark and secluded, just where cats like to sleep

I own a cat too. They sometimes do things we don't understand. She found a new toy.
