I need to make my dog quit peeing on his bedding and in his crate. I know the crate has to be the right size and all that so don't comment that please. But I can take him outside and he will go pee and then I bring him back inside and he goes in his crate right afterwards. He can literally pee for over two minutes outside and then still come in and pee. He doesn't even drink that much. He is a little over a year now and he does let me know when he wants to go outside but I just cant get him to quit going in his bed or crate. I have tried scrubbing his crate and taking all the bedding out and still no success. The crate is barely big enough for him to stand up in but he has enough room to lay in and turn around. The only time he is in the crate is when I go to bed so dont think that he is in there all day or anything like that. I used to just leave the door open so he could come and go as he pleased but now I have to shut it so he wont pee on the carpet. Any GOOD answers would help.

He obviously thinks the cage is his bathroom, just scrubbing is not enough. In the UK we can buy a powder to use in the washing machine, it's called "Ariel BIOLOGICAL".(Perhaps you can get this over there) Wash the bedding in this powder and then scrub and soak the cage in this, also relocate the cage and scrub the area where it has been. This will kill smells dead, it's not enough for you to think that you have got rid of the smells your dogs must think so too.I have tried other washing powder, however they don't work as well. You must also clean the carpet where he has had a pee to ensure that he does not go back to the same spot. Do not use a pine disinfectant as this enhances the old pee smells

Also take your dogs for long walks and when he has a pee go overboard with praise.

Some dogs like to have their scent on their bedding, and there's not much you can do. I make my boys empty, by telling them go pee pee some more, even after it seems they should have peed their own weight, LOL. It helps;) They go out and pee every time my hubby goes out for a smoke, that also helps. Changing bedding daily also helps. It's no big deal, I buy HUGE fleece blankets, cut into baby size pieces, and change them daily. Limit water before bed, and before you leave them for work.

Take that bedding out of the dog's crate. The bedding has become a signal for him to urinate - whether it smells like urine or just the visual of the bedding is enough for him - so it needs to go.
What are you cleaning with? You need an enzymatic cleaner to remove the smell. If you are already using one of those kinds of cleaners, then switch brands.
Keep your dog on a schedule. Don't ever, ever punish a dog for making a potty mistake - just anticipate what his needs are and stick to the schedule. Here's a site to help:

that is tough, crate training has always worked well for me. Have you tried positive reinforcement? Like lets say put him in his crate and when he doesn't pee...give him a treat....start out slow like for 5 min and work your way up to overnight....and of course when he does pee in his crate don't give him one??

Limit water intake before bed.
You said he didn't drink much, but if you pick up his water around 8pm, then take him out last thing before bed, that should help.

Don't clean it all up.
Sometimes leaving a tiny bit of "their" smell curbs the urge to spray it all down again.

Neuter him if he isn't.
There is a strong urge for unfixed dogs to mark territory. You won't get a handle on this until his hormones aren't "bugging" him anymore. In fact, you may notice it gets worse and he starts "sprinkling" furniture, walls, etc.

Get him to go on command.
When you take him out, repeat a potty command over and over until he goes, then praise lavishly. It takes some of the guess work out of bathrooming a dog, especially ones who don't let you know when they need to go.

Get on a strict eating and bathrooming schedule. If you know when he's full, you have a better idea when he needs to empty.

***HINT***
Teach him to signal you when he needs to go by stopping at the door every time you let him out to potty. Use his paw to scratch the door (or have him bark, or whatever), praise him, THEN go out.

the reason the dog is peeing in his crate and bedding is when a dog goes pee or poop you will see him track..he or she will smell the ground all over the place untill she or he finds a spot that it has peed before..."get rid of the crate and the bedding.".and youll solve the problem, when the dog pees out side and comes back in and smells its own pee, it pees again because of its natural instinct.."you cannot wash away the smell,"dogs have an amazing nose...you may need to shampoo your carpet in those spots and deodorize where he/she has gone before.

Leave him out of the crate. Do you think he's telling you he doesn't like it? Why have a dog if you're going to shut him in a crate? I'll never understand that attitude. You don't deserve the goodness that comes from owning a dog.

if the dog came from a pet store or puppymill,, that very well could be your problem,, since their natural instinct is broken because they have been forced to pee where they eat and sleep..

so,, please add a comment and tell us where you got him
