Every cat is different. I have three. One loves to be scratched between the ears, another on her shoulder blades and the the third liked to be stroked down her spine. The key is to let them direct your hand if you don't know how they want to be pet. They'll show you and then you can give them just the right kind of attention

My cats like to be petted on the head between the ears, under the chin and down their back right in front of thier tail. I love to pet their belly but they don't really like it. Just be gentle is all, the cat will let you know what he/she likes.

It depends on the cat.
Some like belly rubs.
Some like full body pets.
Some like ear rubs.
Some like neck scratches.
Some like forehead rubs.
Some like butt pets.
Some like only to be petted a little bit on the back, neck, forehead, butt, belly, etc.
Experiment with your cat to find out the kind of attention that it likes to receive.
