My aunt has just given me a set of paint brushes for Christmas. I have never indicated to her that I have any interest in DIY or decorating, and no one (to my knowledge) has ever advised her of this either.
I am trying to devise a suitable punishment. I have considered making ice cubes out of urine for her gin and tonics.

Why are you being such a Veruca? Donate the paintbrushes to the Salvation Army where someone who truly wants and deserves them can have them and go to your room and think about what you've said.

Normally, I would refer you to an article (below) on the etiquette of receiving an unwanted gift. But since I think that it would be beyond you, just ignore the source I list. I will place it there only for those who are searching for some real answers.

My advice to you is to sit your aunt down, tell her EXACTLY what you told us and I wouldn't worry about any other awful gifts from her.

The best thing that you can do to "punish" her is to let her know what type of person you have turned out to be. Nothing breaks an older relatives heart more than the realization that one of the children that they have loved grew into such an ungrateful, spiteful adult.

Hope this helps! :)

Punish? I don't think so. In fact, perhaps your gift tag may have been mixed up with someone else's gift. What about the other chap who just got tickets to a concert and isn't at all interested in music? Or tickets to a restaurant that specializes in BBQ beef & port and he is a vegetarian?

Just say thank you, and use the paint brushes for something else - maybe basting the turkey? Or you could put one of them in the car for dusting the dash board.

YOU know .. you're actually very lucky that your Aunt even took the time to buy you anything ... you ungrateful selfish Git.

Purchasing gifts isn't always the easiest thing to do .. sometimes I try really hard to find the perfect gift for each person I am buying for ... other times I might just settle for something that I know will be useful or used .. but not overly exciting ....

My mum is a great one for buying gifts that you kinda look at and go (to yourself) " ERRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrr Mum ??? WHAT were you thinking" ....
BUT you still appreciate the fact she bothered....

Now stop being a spoilt little pratt .. and if you really don't want the paint brushes .. donate them to a charity ....and they may use them .. THEN go out any buy yourself SOMETHING materialistic that will make you little johnny kill-joy happy

Give the old lady a break. She meant well or that is how you come across to her--DIY person. Just think that it will save you from buying one more gift for someone. Gift the brushes to someone who could use it. You can always say that you gave it someone who needed it more than you. You'll never know one day she might include you in her will :)

You know,it's a shame you don't see a gift when it's given from the heart. You should be grateful someone thought of you as someone special to recieve a gift at all.
There are people in this world who didn't get anything due to financial difficulty...........
But you go ahead and do what you want to your aunt. But remember, for every action, there's a REaction.

Unwanted Christmas presents brings out the worst in all of us. I once got a pink, pig-shaped, porcelain toilet brush/holder. It was THE most distasteful thing I'd ever seen.

Despite that, I accepted the gift with due politeness and I reciprocated the next year with a variety of cow-shaped fridge magnets.

Well then.....I think you should be happy your aunt is remembering you. Perhaps you may find she is giving you a subtle hint that you need to do some of these jobs yourself rather then depending on somebody else, or perhaps she feels you have moved on from toys for little boys to useful items for ADULTS........mmmmmmmmm i think you have been a lucky at the end of the day to even be thought of!!!!!!!

Tell her "Thank you very much for thinking of me during Christmas." Then donate the paint brushes to some charity. Then you will have done two good deeds instead of one bad deed.

Is there someone in your family who is artistic? Maybe she got the labels muddled! I almost received a poker set and my brother-in-law pink fluffy slippers - fortunately someone else noticed it!

It was from my brother wrapping pressies at the last minute.

Paint a portrait of her using your new brushes. She wont make the same mistake again.
