Hello all.

I am looking to get into coyote hunting. But I wish to save the hides.

I own a 12 gauge pump shotgun
A k98 Mauser
A Mousin Nagant (I believe m44)
And a Chinese SKS

I was originally thinking of getting a few odds and ends for the SKS. But then I thought hay, I haven’t bought a gun in a while. So why not pick one up.

I am looking for a fur friendly coyote hunting gun. And was wounding what would be a good choice for me.

Keep in mind that I (like everyone else) am on a budget. And not looking to spend more then $350 (for the whole 9 yards)

I have heard tell that the SKS is a good coyote gun, but it kind of messes with the fur yes??

Also, since the fur is my main goal hear, I have been told to take a head shot whenever I can get one.... is this a good idea?

I'd say a .243 or a .204 ruger if you want to put up a lil more money

Hope that helps

I hunt them with a .243 Savage... it cost me $340 at Wal-Mart scope and all. The scope is a Simmons 3-9x40 and is "alright" for anything under 150 yards. The gun is sighted at 100 yards because the scope is not the best for what a .243 bullet is capable of. A .243 is very flat shooting and accurate and with a better scope that gun is boss. I go ahead and use a 100 grain bullet while hunting coyote because that is what I hunt deer with. Buy a cheap Savage with some 85 grain bullets and you are good to go. By the way... that gun does not have iron sights so that is a negative.

Pick any caliber in the .223 or ..243 bullet diameter (.223 Rem, 22-250, 243 Winchester) and use a Full Metal Jacket bullet to reduce pelt damage. Remember, if you choose a rifle that shoots .243 diameter bullets, the rifle may also serve as a prarie dog and deer rifle too where legal. Check your state's game regulations to verify this. Your other rifles will also work within 100 yard ranges assuming you have iron sights on them . Use FMJ ammo once again as these do not expand is violently as varmint bullets with exposed tips or exposed lead tips.

Get a .223 and some Black Hills Ammunition rounds with the Barnes Varmint Grenade bullets. They are supposed to fragment inside the animal, leaving a caliber sized entry hole and no exit wound. For a rifle I'd look into the Stevens 200. Retails for around $300 and is essentially a Savage 10 action.

If legal in your area to hunt coyote with a rimfire the .22 Magnum solid is hard to beat as far as 'pelt' friendly is concerned. At closer range you could use the .22 Long Rifle solid, rather than hollow point load. Of if you must use a centerfire, then consider the .223 with FMJ bullets. I would go with the .22 Magnum.

Best.

You could get some nonexpanding FMJ ammo for one of your rifles (the Mauser or the Mosin Nagant) and spend the money on a decent scope.

You could get a Marlin .22 WMR (.22 magnum) for about 200. http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/22WinMagnum/982.aspx
The maximum point blank range for the .22 magnum is about 125 yards, so that's about your effective range.

You could get a centerfire, like a NEF handi-rifle http://www.gunsamerica.com/976900356/Guns/Rifles/New-England-Firearms/NEF_SB_2_Handi_Rifle_223rm_22in.htm
in .204 Ruger, .22 Hornet, .223 or .22-250. The trick with these rounds, is to choose rapidly expanding hollow point bullets which will not exit the animal, minimizing pelt damage. Alternatively, use nonexpanding FMJ bullets.

Get an H&R Sidekick (I think that's the model) in .223. This will knock the crap out of a coyote out to about 300 + yards. These guns go for around $200 plus you can get a reasonable scope for $100 or so.

The best choices for your purpose are 22 Hornet, 218 Bee, 222, 22-250.* I prefer the 22-250 myself.* Forget about taking head shots.* These are all appropriate Varmint calibers.*

.17 HMR the perfect varmint round.

Savage makes one thats on sale by me at Cabelas for 300.

The .17 HMR can go about 200 yards and still be lethal for varmints.

small caliber 22 rimfire or a 223 varmint rifle However the 22 is good for varmint but cannot legaly be used for deer ,because it is rimfire I like the 223 because it is centerfire and makes a good varmint or game choice , Not real good for bigger game though such as muley, elk, bear The 22 will be the cleanest shot and leave the smallest entry point, barely touching the animals hair
