Need to say: I am an atheist and have no religious agenda here. I surmise (for myself) that about 30% of all Muslims either embrace violence, or turn a deaf ear to it. Though I fully embrace religious freedom of expression... is it perhaps time to exert pressure on this particular religion that seems to tolerate violence? If you agree; how shall we do this most appropriately and in recognition of moral Muslims who eschew violence and work for peace? How do we as a society correct the corruption and blithe apathy within their ranks?

I love how people bring up PAST injustices committed by Christians and Whites. Let me put it into pesrspective for you lot - the difference between the Crusades and Jihad is that the Crusades actually ENDED a long time ago. Understand?

I happen to agree with you to some extent. I don't think it is a coincidence that most of the major armed conflicts in the world today have to do with Muslims. I highly doubt that a collective of many diverse cultures, religions, and values could all have a beef with Islam, so it stands to reason that the converse is true and it is the single united Islamic front that has a problem with everyone else.

An excellent example: Back in the 80s, the Israeli military accidently let a Lebanese militia massacre a palestinian refugee camp. The result? 10% of the entire population of Israel staged a massive protest in Tel Aviv to condemn this horrible act. Several prominent people (including past Israeli PM Ariel Sharon) got their asses kicked as a result of this event. Fast-forward to today. Have you ever seen "moderate" muslims protest when a suicide bombing occurs? Hell no. They didn't even protest when 9/11 or the trian bombing in Britain happened. Many of their lot celebrated the carnage, as a matter of fact.

Definitely food for thought. ;)

No, prejudice is ethically and morally never correct, nor constructive.
The strict separation between state and religion combined with strict dominance of human rights above religious belief is the only way.
I think some muslims have an agenda and step up demands. They asked only respect for their god an prophet (no cartoons) and even lied an fabricated stories on the subject. They implied pictures that had never been in the danish newspaper and started up the frenzy months after the publication, after they had had the time to coordinate their campaign.
Veil for the women, even in public office is another demand. Separate schools, halal food in public schools, female obstetricians (although this constitutes no problem in Morocco), they can not shake hands with other people (I think that is pretty insulting), and so on.
A dozen years ago or so, all these points did not create a problem in western countries. I do not think islam has changed in that time. Now muslims try to occupy more and moe the public space.
A problem is that though many countries have separation of state and religion the RCC has managed to be a bit more equal than the rest. So muslims want to be even more equal.
Another argument is that advocates of individual freedom and human rights get virtuallu no support from muslims in muslim countries.
Belief and religion inside the church, mosque, home, no problem, the more the merrier. In public areas, schools, hospitals, on the work floor : no. And with respect for our traditions, like the Xmas tree.
After all, we did not kick out the churches who tried to interfere with our public and private lives, to let in the mullahs through the back door.

I think you need to go hug a Muslim and tell them your sorry.

Your surmise that 30% of Muslim are predesposed to violence. Then according to you, over 8 million of the 27 million muslim in Iraq would be working against the Coalition Army there. I dont think the insurgents are that strong.

But, lets try this: If the United States was invaded and occupied by a foreign country, what percentage of Americans do you think would be working to drive the invaders out?

Very good question.

But you might like to consider this if you're a doctor. What do you do with a person with some organs already infected with cancer cells???

You cut it out.

Sorry, there's no easy medication or way out to handle this absurd religion that is causing us so much nonsense today with people dying for nothing every other day. You either put your foot down and tell them to get lost or you open your doors a little and let them grow in your backyard and waiting for that final day of reckoning when your people start dying for reasons you wish you only knew.

PS. Don't listen to those who are lying to you that evil islam is peaceful. Those are minions of the devil. http://www.prophetofdoom.net

You will find violence in every culture as well as prejudice. That doesn't mean you have to be a part of it. All cultures/societies are screwed up and if you really think it's necessary to blow up Muslims why don't we blow up everything including ourselves. Or NOT.

You have some soul searching to do. The pen is mightier than the sword and can resolve issues more appropriately.

Violence is never needed. We need to understand each other and adding more violence just makes the issue worse.

The religion itself does not promote violence.

The hatred people feel stems from the recent terrorism attacks by so-called Muslims, and the strange, seemingly harsh laws in Muslim-dominated countries. As for the terrorism, one cannot judge a religion by the acts of such a small number of men. Yes, the terrorists did claim to be doing their dirty work in the name of Allah, but here's a story for you. In my city, a few years back, three Christian men beat a homosexual to death and claimed it was to please God.

Islam is only an extension of Christianity, after all. They treat the Bible as a sacred, valid document and pray to the same God, and even respect Jesus.

It is very sad that people think badly of Muslims, but it is understandable, given the shock of 9/11 and other recent attacks. However, there is no problem with the religion itself.

Absolutely NOT! It is true most Arabs are Muslim, but the vast majority of Muslims ( 93% ) are not Arab. Do not confuse Arab violence with Islam. These acts happen not because of Islam, but because the west treatment of the middle east over the last 100 years. Any people christian, jew or whatever, who have been treated like the Arabs have would act the same way.

For the hundredth time...not all muslims are violent. You can't possibly say that we are the most violent peope out there. I mean come on...so you have heard of some muslims who blew themselves up and you have also heard that every terrorist act is committed by a muslim (which I don't believe) but what about the everyday acts of violence committed in the USA by other americans?? All I hear in America is shooting after shooting, kidnapping, rape, robberies, drunk driving...what about all those things? Why don't you want to do something to stop THAT??? It is much more common than any suicidal bombings...we are not the most violent, you should know that...I'm not saying all Americans are violent but not all Muslims are violent as well...Every culture has their problems and muslims don't have the majority of the problems

It wasn't so long ago that right here, in the U.S., women and children were considered to be the property of men. In 1980, or so, there was a story in the news about a woman who brought rape charges against her husband. It was a major scandal, to some, that a woman would "dare" to refuse sex to her husband, never mind have him arrested for "taking what was his."

There was TV movie, several years later, based on a true story about a woman whose husband beat her, then proceeded to jump on her back until he broke it, in full view of at least one policeman. The cop did nothing to protect the woman. Nothing!

As I see it, the only way to deal with issues like these is to talk about them. Dissect them. Marginalize those who justify such things. Just as the black rights, womens rights, and gay rights movements wouldn't have succeeded without outside support, we must all support muslims who abhor such behavior, rather than lump them in with the rest.

If the world had waited until christianity was gone, rather than standing up to its religious extremists, we might still be having crusades and inquisitions today.

Once the killing of innocent Muslims (in Iraq, Afghanistan) and torturing of Muslims (Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay) stops then the violence would go down a lot. I would say all violence from people of all faiths should stop, not just from Muslims. So if you were to try and stop Muslims carrying out violence, you should also stop people like George Bush carrying out violence. Anyway, most Muslims are peaceful. Only less than 1% of the Muslims carry out violence.
