I am an accountant - and yes I love my job, I keep going back to Uni, did my second pg degree and now third pg degree in Tax, in Accounting etc.
Is the job boring? F*ck yes. But, hey, I love it. I love our (Australian) Tax System as well. The only people that say Accounting and/or Tax is not boring are accountants - because we are boring people ourselves.
Accountants think we are exciting people, accountants think we are cool because we do ..... (insert anything here) - but trust me - if you meet people from other areas of life - we are right at the top of the rank in terms of boring level. We are in denial you see. All accountants are in denial. Who wants to admit that he or she is a complete boring creature?
The main question here is - are you yourself a boring person (like me) if so - you will fit well - otherwise, you could get really depressed after a while. I have seen some people gone totally rather mad and decided to jump out of the profession

Add some more:

What is a boring person according to me? Someone who is very much a mono-dimensional. Someone who can't see life, humanity, the world, beyond one way of thinking. And in the case of accountancy - money. I admit this - and I can look around at work - my boss, other co workers, especially those that have been working and living the live of accountancy for a while - we are very much mono-dimensional. We are very excited about money, we are very excited about giving people advice about tax, about how to save money. We are very adamant about measure of success - money. I run my own little "accountancy business" on the side - doesn't make me a better person at all. Except for having more money on the side.

If you have other traits in you, some other talents, think of humanity, think of human race, forget accountancy and do something else. Money is good, but money is not everything in life.

That's kind of the impression the counselors tried to give me but then I can't imagine sitting there talking to a bunch of kids day in and day out as a terribly exciting job so you have to take a good look at the person expressing that opinion. Accounting is for people with good minds and good maths skills and the ability to apply lots of rules. Mediocre people do not go far. You learn a whole lot of rules and the books are boring and too long for the amount of facts given. When you graduate you will have to take a flunky job to get experience and then you move up according to your abilities and ambition. CPA's and good accountants are respected members of the community, make good money, and have lots of opportunities. There are a whole lot of people can't pull off the degree with very good grades. Should you choose to become an accountant and succeed, that counselor would end up really liking your advice but not be able to afford you.
And for the guy above me, I"ve been a bartender, city bus driver, waitress, secretary, flunky, salesperson and student. I don't find anything boring in my job but perhaps he is working for someone else 9 to 5 and goes home when the bell rings. I work for myself, when I want and for who I want. I can take off of work when I want and go where I want. I find it exciting to be able to advise people on how to spend/invest their money to their best advantage. I think it is terribly creative. I enjoy what I do. I think some people are just boring. . .

It depends on you. I've worked in accounting and actually found it very challenging and satisfying. Other people are asleep in their chairs after 5 minutes. If you like that type of work, it can be a great job, but if you not the number crunching/repetitive skill type of person, you may get bored.

Depends, as in any profession, on your job. A CPA working for himself uses S/W to do accounting, and mostly meets with people and plans their financial paths.

Accountants who work for large, boring companies are probably like any of us who so this, bored

I would imagine that anytime between January and April 15th being an account is definitely NOT boring. Anytime before and after that well...

yep, nothing special in my opinion. I went back to school to get a degree in sociology because it's boring, repetitive once you know what you are doing. not to mention, I seem to have lost my social skills with it
