You don't earn new medals as a veteran, but the military does come out with different ribbons for whatever campaign you were involved in, in my case I was in enduring freedom, and iraqi freedom. It wasn't over before I left, so they still may come out with different medals or ribbons. Just because I'm out now, doesn't mean I won't be eligible for it if one were to come out today.

What ever awards you received will be listed on your DD-214 However, this is filled out on the date of your separation and sometimes an award will be made to a unit for service during a specified time period. Some veterans were discharged before the award was entered in their SRB.

Go to this link to fill out a DD149 , APPLICATION FOR CORRECTION OF MILITARY RECORD

http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/infomgt/forms/forminfo/forminfopage2137.html

They will research your records and advise you of any additional awards you may be entitled to. You will also get an amended DD214 to show the awards.

Hope this is of help

How would you earn medals and ribbons since you left the military? I've never heard of a "Veteran's Medal".

Out 2 Lunch is right. You do not earn anything being a Veteran. Everything you earned will be on your DD214. Anything that is not on there you are not authorized for.
