I already have a k98 Mauser, but the stock is in rough shape along with the finish on the barrel. It shoots great. My father gave me a very nice scope, carrying case, sling and other accessories for it, but I want to use it on a nicer rifle and keep this one for target shooting playing around while setting up a nicer one for hunting. Should I buy another K98 German Mauser or a different one such as a Yugoslavian? Which is the best?

I like the K98 also. I have been seeing these advertised everywhere-nicest I have seen in a while: http://www.mauser.org/rifles/german_k98/index.htm

You won't be able to easily scope the straight-bolt Yugo Mauser without modifying the bolt handle. You can still get German K98's at semi-reasonable prices if you look around. The SMLE is good too, and cheaper. You will have to plug the magazine to use an SMLE for hunting, as it has a 10-round capacity.

For what you'll pay for a Mauser in good shape
nowadays you can get a good used modern
bolt gun. (Ruger 77 eg.)
Remember that military rifle has probably
seen harder use than anything you're likely to
purchase, and modern steels are stronger than
they made 70 yr.s ago.
Scope mounts will be easier to find & install too.
Most modern guns are pre-drilled.

The best is the K98 Mauser, no ifs, ands, or buts.*

Heck, get a new one. I like the british SMLE's better. Action is not as strong, but they're smoother and hold 10 rounds. Anyway, good luck.
