I say that the third option given by qris (above) is a good interpretation from a worldly point of view. Meaning, if you don't believe in God, then the third option given by qris is the most likely interpretation for your recurring dream. Otherwise...
If you are a spiritual person, our dreams can always be interpreted from a spiritual perspective. In your case, driving a car represents the spiritual journey, to grow in Christ, whose goal is to follow that Way which leads to Ultimate Salvation. Ultimately, Christ is supposed to be in control of that Journey (the Driver), but there are always choices to make along that journey which none can make for us. Thus, there is a dual aspect to whom is driving the car.
The other respondent (adriftfeline), whom mentioned a car journey, spoke about being in the back seat. In that situation, the driver should be Christ but, like a taxi, we sit in the back seat and tell the Driver where we want to go. In her dream, the driver seeming to lose consciousness and her feeling like she needed to take over the wheel, is not really representative of Christ leaving the position of Driver. It is more representative of her feeling she had to take over the wheel -- which Christ will always relinquish to us without a fight (thus the driver symbolically loses consciousness).
In your case, though, you being the driver does not, necessarily, mean you are not allowing Christ to have control of your life. Instead, it is just reinforcing the idea that, even though Christ is supposed to be in charge of our lives, the choices about the direction of our spiritual journey still have to be made by that free-will gift God gave us to use.
Now, as to direction... As would seem obvious, moving forward represents getting closer to that Ultimate Goal -- as would, moving backward, represents going in the wrong direction. However, in the case of the other respondent, if you feel out of control, as the driver, then it means you are unsure of your direction or ability to make good choices, on this journey, no matter which way you're moving.
Lastly, in your case, it sounds like when you are moving forward (going in the right direction), you are confident in your choices, to follow Christ, because you know that He is guiding you in that Path. (The "brakes", in this situation, being the effectiveness of your own will power when Christ is in your choices.) When you are moving in reverse (going in the wrong direction -- away from Christ), you have no confidence to stop yourself from making the wrong choices; from falling away from Him. (The "brakes", in that situation, being the ineffectiveness of your own will power when Christ is not in your choices.) Sometimes, you recognize how the results of these wrong choices could have been worse (dream "near accidents"). Other times, those wrong choices lead to actual disasters (dream "accidents") in your life.
The solution, of course, is to surrender control to another Driver whom has the Power to stop your car's backward movement and to put it on the correct Path, away from obstacles which would derail you, and moving forward again.
God bless.

I'm pretty good at dream interp so let me give this a shot. I'd say this is an interesting one. Usually the car motif is reserved for life pathways. So a person perpetually stuck in reverse feels like they are going nowehere in life, a person whho can't get the car started is really feeling like they are stuck. But the no brakes in reverse. I think this can be one of three things. First you could just be afraid to drive. Second you could be afraid that what you are currently doing today will send you careening the wrong direction your life. The third and what I consider most likely is that you have something shady or bad in your past that you like to keep hidden from others either a guilt or something bad that was done to you. And events prior to the dream stir up memories you'd rather keep locked. And the no brakes i s a thing that you feel if the past is opened you will not be able to stop it from coming out

Having recurring dreams means you have not yet received the message of your guidance dream- this is what I see it as. Once you have received it and acted upon it these dreams will stop.
You obviously have had something on your mind worrying or troubling you for a long while and now it is being represented in your occuring dreams. The dream can mean two things:
1. You actually have a problem with the car brakes or something with the car, perhaps you can't afford to fix it? and this is worrying you as everytime you venture out it will on on your mind.. stressful. If you have a problem with the car do your best to fix it, and your dreams will stop as your worries will have stopped.
2. It could also mean you are on a journey in life and really deep down want to achieve something or progress in something ( only you know what this is) but you really want to move forwards but instead are moving backward or really not getting anywhere.. thus when you" put on the brakes" - this part expresses your need to do something about it- you want to stop it.. this is reflecting that your efforts are not enough ( perhaps you know this and you lose your motivation too quickly when trying to achieve something). Thus you continue in reverse - this reflects that you feel you are not getting anywhere.
Make a real effort in your life to achieve what you really want to do deep down and your dreams will stop as you have acted upon it.

This means that your subconscious mind thinks your life is headed in the wrong direction (the car going backwards). The fact that you are the driver symbolizes that you yourself need to do something better with your life, or with a current situation in your life. The part of the dream when sometimes you crash, and sometimes you don't, represents how you are on "thin ice", meaning when things go well, they barely go well (if that makes sense). Say you are standing at the edge of boat. When you are on the boat, everything is good...but one small step and you are sinking into the water. Basically, your mind is telling you to make better decisions sooner, and think before you act.
If you solve this problem, then the dreams should go away, or alter slightly and mean something completely different.
Hope I helped :)

Actually, I don't have an answer. Your reoccurring dream is so similar to one of mine. I'm always in the back seat of a car when the driver suddenly goes unconscious. I have to jump over the seats and try and hit the breaks before hitting something. Like your dream, the breaks never really work that well...then the dream's gone. Good luck finding your answer.

Most dreams contain messages that serve to teach us something about ourselves. Unfortunately many a times we forget what we dream about as we go about our daily routine. With recurring dreams, the message may be so important and/or powerful that it just will not go away. The frequent repetition of such dreams forces you to pay attention and confront the dream. The dream is trying desperately to tell you something. Such dreams are often nightmarish or frightening in their content, which also helps you to take notice and pay attention to them.
To dream that you are driving a car, denotes your ambition, your drive and your ability to navigate from one stage of your life to another.
To dream of a car accident, symbolizes your emotional state. You may be harboring deep anxieties and fears. Are you "driving" yourself too hard? This dream may tell you to slow down before you hit disaster. You need to rethink or re-plan your course of actions and set yourself on a better path. This is true whether going forward or "in reverse".

I interperet that as you're life is motionless, even moving in a seemingly backwards pace, and you're powerless to stop it. Examine things/events that cause you to reserve yourself, also see if you can eliminate uneccessary control factors. I might also add the question, is there somebody in your life you see as an overwhelming, smothering type of person? Your dreams might be a message of regaining self-control and ownership.

Maybe it means that you aren't "driven" enough to take control over something in your life! (pun intended :D). I don't think you should spend too much time worrying about it. The more I try to analyze my own dreams it starts making me worry more. Most likely you'll reach that point of control and the dream will stop. Try not to think about it too much. :)

Simply put, it means that at times you feel like you have no control over your life. Maybe there is someone in your life who is controlling you like a parent, authority figure, spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend. Are there times where you feel helpless in a situation? To me, that's what your dream is saying.

Do you feel like your life is sort of spiralling out of your control and you have no choices? Are you in a situation which you'd like to get out of? Do you feel trapped or like you have no way out of an uncomfortable scenario? I guess you are just freaked out over something. Don't worry, it will go away soon.
