Bartlett's Familiar Quotations and the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations are the standard reference books. Bartlett arranges his entries in chronological order, so that you can see at a glance what famous people were born the same year (1809 was a great one), and the Oxford Dictionary arranges them alphabetically, so that a specific person is easier to find. Both have extensive indexes.
