I keep telling my dad that Christians are those who believe in Christ and then there are branches, including catholicism, Jehovah's witnesses, etc.; but he keeps coming up with different things. Any help?

A Christian is a person who believes that Jesus is God the Son, and who has accepted Him into their life and accepted His death as the payment for their sin and who realize that there is not work they could do to get them into heaven.

Jehovah Witnesses do not believe that Jesus is God the Son.
Mormons believe everyone can become a god and that Jesus was just one of many sons of God.

Most Christians, Catholic and Protestant, do not recognize the above two groups as Christian because their basic beliefs about Jesus are so different.

Biblically there is One God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus is God in the flesh.

But it takes more than just the right doctrine to truly be a Christian, a true Christian has turned their heart and life over to Jesus.

EDIT----EDIT----EDIT
It takes more than just believing in Jesus. Some atheists believe that Jesus was a real historical figure, its also what you believe ABOUT Jesus. Not only that, but what you DO with that belief, do you turn your heart and life over to Him, or just mentally acknowledge Him

Don't argue with him. Father knows best and he has been around longer than you.

Only joking. I used to hate it when my Dad wouldn't agree with me. These days I realize that it doesn't matter that much. Have a great Christmas Day!

to be a christian means to be christ like. to many people abuse the word in my opinion. it seems most people in the world today if asked will tell you they're a christian but can they say they at least try to walk as he walked. this isnt to say we have to be perfect but we at least have to try.
