Basically it means that Gods people don't necessarily have to be descendants of Abraham and that eventhough someone is a physical descendant of Abraham they don't become heirs if they reject God. Plus, physical bonds aren't as important to God as spiritual, and moral reverance...For You do not desire sacrifice, or I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart-These, O God, You will not despise. Psalm 51:17

Dear Friend,

I did some research on Romans 9:6-7 and thought you may be interested in the following information:

The apostle now faces up to a serious theological problem. If God made promises to Israel and His chosen earthly people, how can this be squared with Israel's present rejection and with the Gentiles being brought into the place of blessing? Paul insists that this does not indicate any breach of promise on God's part. He goes on to show that God has always had a sovereign election process based upon promise and not just on lineal descent. Just because a person is born into the nation of Israel does not mean that he is an heir to the promises. Within the nation of Israel, God has a true, believing remnant.

Not all Abraham's offspring are counted as his children. Ishmael, for example, was of the seed of Abraham. But the line of promise came through Isaac, not through Ishmael. The promise of God was, "In Isaac your seed shall be called" (Gen. 21:12). The Lord Jesus made this same interesting distinction when talking with the unbelieving Jews in John 8:33-39. They said to Him, "We are Abraham's descendants" (v. 37). But when they said, "Abraham is our father," the Lord replied, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham" (v. 39). In other words, they were descended from Abraham, but they didn't have Abraham's faith and therefore they wre not his spiritual children.

Hope that is helpful.

Sincerely in Christ Jesus,

lostnsavd...

Paul was pointing out in verse 6 that Gods Word (Jesus) did not fail to accomplish his purpose (to save humanity). This was expounded upon by the statement "For it is not everybody who is a descendant of Jacob (Israel) who belongs to the true Israel." i.e. Israel was chosen by God for fellowship through the law, gentiles were chosen by God for fellowship through Jesus salvation. The Jews were blood descendants of Abraham, while all who accept Christ as their Savior are considered descendants of Abraham through Christ.

The idea that not all will be saved comes from a Western view of an Eastern Scripture.

To get a sense of the eternal and forgiving nature of God, read the source below to put things into perspective.

In other words, we are all children of God. Some people find their way home soon, and some find their way home later... but we all find our way home sooner or later.

This resource sorts out a lot of this "scripture confusion."

in reference to the Scripture what is stated is this, Abraham's true descendants are not necessarily from his bloodline, but are more in line with that of his hearts desire and actions --his faith. Abraham's descendants transverse bloodline heredity but or born through faith. For the scripture said" that Abraham believed God and righteous was added to him." paraphrase
Is Israel the descendants of Abraham ? well," Yes."
Are all Israelis Abraham's children? well",No"--yes they posses the bloodline of Abraham but "No" in the sense that not all Israelis have the faith that Abraham had possessed .

Nice scripture. My version says, "Not all who spring from Israel are really "Israel." This means that those who were to make up the "spiritual Israel" of God would not necessarily be fleshly Jews by birth.

Compare this to Romans 2: 28, 29 which says, "For he is not a Jew who is one on the outside, nor is circumcision that which is on the outside upon the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one on the inside, and his circumcision is that of the heart by spirit, and not by a written code..."

And then Revelation 2:9 mentions "the blasphemy by those who say they themselves are Jews, and yet they are not but are a synagogue of Satan."

You should have finished the quotation."That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. " This was talking about a promise that was made that Sarah would have a son. Not only Sarah but Rebecca who had conceived by Issac. These were to be children of the flesh not children of God but since they were not yet born they had not done any evil.

Back in those days people probably got excited when the red team beat the blue team at the local chariot race, but these days we couldn't care less.

I think your text can be viewed in the same light. Quite important to the people living 2000 years ago, but hardly worth bothering about today.

I think that it is yet another piece of scripture which tells us that those who are children of promise are counted as the sons of Abraham. That those who are not trusting God are not counted by God as being the children of God. That it is not by genetic material that they are children of Abraham, but by promise that they are counted by God as God's people. As Abraham was a truster of God, so too are the nations of people who are trusters of God those who are God's people. So as Paul saw in the scriptures,
27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:
"Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea,
only the remnant will be saved.

And then this:
31 but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone." 33 As it is written:
"See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."

So God kept His promise:
Deuteronomy 32:21
They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

And that is why Israel, as a nation does not believe in the Son of God. Even with the very scriptures they hold left in their care.

Not all that are by blood descendants of the chosen people are actually members of the spiritual community.
