Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5

The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it. "But people who are not aware that they are doing wrong will be punished only lightly. Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given." (Luke 12:47-48

No, it gives me no joy.
The old testament is ful of verses supporting slavery and punishing disobedient slaves. In the New Testament there are dozens of them.
The fathers of the RCC praised themselves that they turned slaves into good slaves.
Transport of black slaves from Africa to America (about 12 million) was only allowed if there was a missionary on board.
The Papal states had slaves untill 1799 and had about the worst regime for slaves (and for most of their population). Several catholic colonies in Latin America had slaves untill late in the 19th century.

No joy at all.

You are taking the verses out of Context.

Eph 6 is advising every member of the family to be respectful and or loving to all other members (husbands love your wifes/wifes respect your husbands. Children obey your parents/parents don't anger your children. Servants obey your masters/masters don't abuse your servants). It is a reflection of reality not a commentary on what should be.

The Verses from Luke are part of a parable about a man who goes away and leaves a steward in charge of his property. The steward steals, misuses and generally takes over the man's property. Suddenly the man returns without warning. Jesus said that the master will be very unhappy with the steward and will react like a Roman era master would. This also did not make any moral statement on slavery, but acknowledged that it does exist.

We are all servants to someone! We serve our wives, husbands, employers and children. We are "slaves" in that we will never be totally free until we die and cross over to the next life and what ever is waiting for us there.

Taking scriptures out of context can be misleading and is often a cheap trick of someone who is bitter or critical of religions. I apologize for being direct and if I have offended you with my answer, I hope you forgive me....Blessings!

I think your asking the wrong question. It's not are we glad you support slavery, it's if we really care, or if we will stand in your way if you have a pro-slavery march. To your question, no. To mine, no. And as far as the bible and slavery, I haven't finished it yet, but from what I saw of the scripture, I will say that back in that time if someone was a slave, it nomally meant that they had done wrong, and slavery was their punishment, and we all know how God feels about punishment.

It's wise advise if a person FINDS themselves to be a slave to be an obedient one. That doesn't mean Jesus condones slavery as he does not. He's just giving wise advise to people who discover they are one because of someone misusing their freedom and making them a slave. In the same way women are wise to submit to their husband if they find they have married someone that doesnt' truly love them as they should as submissive women find more favor in the eyes of man and God than rebellious ones do.
