You can only legally reside in ONE state. The second you say, "OK, I live here" you're there. No waiting period.

Your car can get ticketed if you don't change your tags. You can't change your tags until you get insurance in that state, and the insurance company will insist you change your license within 30 days - in compliance with the law.

As soon as you take a job, you're a resident. If you aren't planning to go back and start living there, then you're a resident as well.

Basically, the only way you aren't a resident is if you're a tourist, student or temporary worker.

If you never change your license over, then your license isn't valid after 30 days and you're considered driving without a license.

Basically, if your living and working full time in a state then you are a resident. That said, you have 30 days to switch your drivers license and registration.
