That's a tougher question than "if it was allowed".
It's hard to explain why people ever had slaves. The fact that it happened during the time period of any great person is hard to explain. In fact Christians used the fact that slaves existed in Jesus time to justify there actions to enslave others during the European American Slave period. As for PBUH the simple answer is that culturally the people had always owned slaves. The hard part is deciding whether the Prophet Mohammed attempted to change that situation or let the will of the people make the decision, since I don't know what he thought I will go with historical documents.
Historically texts exist that show that viziers and clerics often made the case against banning slavery. The clerics especially liked the slaves to have someone do their work, or because the rich kept them supplied with wealth and power, and by upholding slavery the rich were more likely to supply clerics. The extremely rich were very willful, and by those two examples those with less money also kept slaves
So just like every period in mankind's history the rich or powerful make decisions about what parts of the religion are promoted, most of the people act like like sheep following the rich or powerful and true believers try to affect change. That's really true of any nation, any religion.
Back then wealth was consolidated among very powerful leaders and a few extremely rich merchants and certain powerful clerics in the lands of the Prophet Mohammed, similar to how it is today.

In the name of Allah the most Gracious the most Merciful
My dear friend What makes you want to connect slavery with our beloved prophet Muhammed [peace and blessings be upon him ] Slavery is a shameful reality that has always existed since time.It existed during the times of all the prophets and even jesus christ [ may peace be on them ].Slaves were a part of a wealthy mans posessions and
no one wanted to do away with it .Do you know of any solutions that were brought forward to do away or lessen the
evil of slavery ? Let me tell you that the Prophet Muhammad
Paved the way for abolishing Slavery By encouraging people To free their slaves , to marry them , to treat them kindly and
allow them to take part in our acts of worship, the biggest support salvery recieved was from our creator Allah the almighty who instructed the the prophet [peace be on him ] to inform the people that freeing slaves were an expation for sins and mistakes committed in the religion Not mere ourfathers and hail Marys !Ask yourself why it is more of the
coloured people in the states and in europe who are reverting
to Islam !

It was already there, and Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) had introduced a system for them to buy themselves out of it or one has to release a slave if he didn't observe some islamic rituals.

Because organised religion has always walked hand in hand with money and power.
In some muslim countries large parts of the population are still enslaved: Niger (8%) and Mauritania (20%).
Happily Happy: can you give me a source on this please?
Edit: Thumbs down: I give here three facts anybody can check and I ask someone to give a source. Fact must be scaring some people.

It was wrong even that time. But like the Intoxicants it was so attached with the culture. so the ban came slowly one by one same like the law for the intoxicants.
