For someone who used to do a lot of photography in an *old* manual and wants to get into digital. They'd be more interested in features like optical image stabilization, zoom lenses, and depth of field preview than, say, red eye reduction. Price range is probably $400-1000, but I'm willing to take a hit to the wallet in the interests of image quality. Thanks!

If you already have some equipment of your old camera (namely lenses, external flashes, etc.), and you're happy with it, you might want to consider staying with the same brand, because in many cases you'll be able to use that equipment with the digital body.
I own a Canon Rebel XTi, and I'm very happy with it. Both Canon and Nikon are good brands, and I've also heard good things about some Pentax and Sony models, even though I never tried them.

Nikon D80. Read this review that also compares it with the nearest Canon.

And check out posted D80 photos here. Type in key words that match types of photos you might be interested in taking.

Personally, I took a wallet hit and got a Nikon D200 this week, but I already have bags filled with Nikon lenses. Hope this is helpful.

If It were me, I'd be picking out a Cannon EOS 40D. It's around $1200 or so. One Awesome camera though! If that's not in your range, check out the Cannon Rebel XTi. Nikons are also good cameras, but I am pretty sold on Cannon for their ease of use.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xt is the standard. I've heard only praise for it from everybody who has one.
