I received reckless driving in the state of Virginia in the city of Chesapeake. Im 17 years old and this would be my first traffic ticket anywhere. I used to live in New York and I moved here but I still retain my New York license. What are the realistic charges that would be held against me?

You will be in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. The juvenile judges in Virginia usually take your age under consideration. Two things will help you: An apologetic, lesson-learned attitude with the judge, and getting everything in order before the court date. In Virginia, you have 30 days after moving here to provide proof that your vehicle is insured and to update your tags and driver's license. Get your Virginia license plates and your Virginia Driver's License before you go to court and be demonstrative to the judge that you will drive safely and courteously from now on. You can, with that in mind, talk to the officer before court and ask if he will recommend that the judge reduce the charge from reckless driving to improper driving, a lesser included offense which would result in only half the points against your license and a smaller fine.

I can't give you information on the fines, but I suggest you go before the judge with a very contrite attitude. He may reduce the charge. You do not want to get another ticket on top of a reckless driving charge.

VA now has all the civil remedy fees, plus the Court fines and costs for the RD conviction and loss of license for six months. If you have had no previous tickets, talk to the Commonwealth and the officer prior to Court date and see if they would recommend a Driver Improvement Clinic. Most VA judges will amend the RD charge to a lesser speed.

Yeah, since you're so young, the judge may think you learned your lesson by simply appearing. Be forward: Yes, you can see how your driving was seen as reckless and that, as a new resident, you were accustomed to driving as you did in NY. You want to learn from your mistake by driving better, not being financially punished.
As long as the judge isnt a prickle, he may relax the charge. Good luck.

You face charges in that county despite what your license says. Every county's different so it depends on the police officer.
