Religion started out as an attempt to explain phenomena people could observe but not explain: thunder, fire, death, suffering, the stars, the cycle of the season.
The same powers that were thought to be behind these phenomena were also attributed the power to manipulate the aspirations of people: a good hunt, protection against ennemies, life after death of beloved ones.
Humans being humans, some saw an opportunity to manipulate these powers in the eyes of others: rituals, prophecies, discrimination, slavery, hierarchy.

From longing for explanation, the purpose of religion has domination in society.
