I have the same problem. My best advise, ask around about the dentist in your area. You should be able to find a understanding dentist. Also, I do not know what it is called but the gas that they can give you will really help you relax. The only way that I can go to a dentist anymore.

Trade you. I grew up with one that didn't use pain killers or gas. Imagine hours spent in the chair, feeling every bite of the drill.

It wasn't until I joined the military that I discovered dentists regularly use pain killers

What has helped me is most dentists now have learned to deal with sensitive patients. The one I have knows to stick the nitrous mask on as soon as I sit down. The tech that cleans my teeth is a hoot. She jokes, chats and it's distracting.

Suggestion: First ask your friends about their dentist. The great, caring dentists will quickly stand out. Second visit the dentist office. Just walk in. Explain it's been a while and your dentist as a tween was rough. Ask how the dentist deals with this? Ask about nitrous. Meet the dentist. Do you like the dentist? Will the dentist listen to you? Does the dentist care about your feelings? Mostly this will be a gut reaction.

You like the dentist and feel comfortable? The dentist knows how to deal with sensitive patients? Make an appointment for an exam. Keep the appointment. Allow time after the appointment to just go home and take a break.

Most likely the exam will be followed by x-rays and a cleaning appointment. Go to them.

Smile!

Dentistry has changed alot over the years. I hated dentists too because when I was a child, my dentist didnot believe in novacaine to fill a cavity and he would always hit a nerve . It hurt alot and i hated the man. But dentists don't do that anymore and most of your dental groups that have offices of the same name all over your area are a good place to go. i have had good experiences from going to them. But due to my dislike of dentists, I have let my teeth go for many years and now the proper care is very costly and I have had to have many pulled over the years, have developed gum disease and also have to wear a partial plate which is no fun. You have no idea what you have lost until you are stuck with false teeth. So bite the bullet and go. It is highly unlikely that you will experience what you suggest happened before. I have never had a dentist yell at me nor any of their assistants.Good luck

I'm 30 and quite afraid myself.... I even dread going to get my teeth cleaned. I also had a lousy, careless dentist (orthodontist) as a teen. But ever since I've been seeing this really great female dentist who is very sweet and patient and gentle. You just have to find one like her who will treat you well and avoid you as much pain as possible, and who will have the latest technology to perform their job. In my country we don't have that gas they spoke about.... but if your new dentist can give it to you, it might help you be more relaxed.... That's about all you can do, and understand that it's better not to leave your teeth unattended so that the next visits are not painful and thus you don't have a reason to be afraid anymore!

Call 1-800-dentist and tell them that you are looking for a gentle dentist who will explain every thing he does to you. Explain that you haven't seen a dentist in awhile. Don't neglect your teeth any longer.

A bad experience can turn anyone off anything. At the end of day you have to remember that the majority of dentists are there to help you. They care as much about your teeth as you do and you have to trust them.

I am horrified. I cry when I get a cleaning. I literally shake in the chair. Some dentists offer some kind of gas to calm you down. I am looking for one.

well, for starters you won't get over your fear by sitting home and NOT going to a dentist.. that's only going to hurt you.
i would find one that is highly recommended.. ask your friends about their dentist and maybe consider going to his/her's. try and go to a dentist who is comforting and laxed, not one that is impatient and yells.
but you really need to see one because a cleaning every (i think it's six months) is crucial to the well being of your teeth.
