I have a rule, if I don't drink it or eat it by the sell by date I throw it out. What is your rule when it comes to food?

I agree with you,if food or drinks aren't used up by the sell by date,I throw them out too! Some people may think that sounds really silly, but I would rather be safe than sorry! I say,"When in doubt, throw it out!" ;-)

You know, milk and all foods for that matter, are costly items.
Plus, there are people who wish they had milk and don't and you're just carelessly tossing it out. If there's nothing spoiled then why get rid of it? Just because it says you must sell the product by a certain date does not mean you must use it by that date. If someone buys milk on the "by sale date" then do you think they can't use it, but for only that one day? Don't be foolish any longer. As long as the milk is kept cold in the refrigerator then it will stay fresh past the sale date stamped on it. So, get out of the bad habit of throwing away good food, otherwise bring it to a family that can use it.

I figure the sell by date means that's a few days before its to bad to eat. They wouldn't have the sell by date be the same as the must eat by date, that wouldn't make any sense.

With milk I don't worry about the date, if it's bad you're going to know it by the smell!! With meat I follow the dates a little more carefully cause it isn't always obvious if it's just turned.

hi, useby dates are only really a guide, its law to put them on all perishable items, i say use your nose for things like milk and also eggs, as these can be eaten way after their date. The only thing i won't consume after the sell by date is meat, too risky,
To save throwing your out of date milk if you don't want to risk it, why not make some yoghurt or cheese out of it??? plenty of recipes can be found on the internet.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Remember how your mother told you about the starving kids in Ethiopia? They eat rotting carrion and are still alive (and still starving). When food is bad, you'll know it by taste, smell, or appearance, not a date on a carton.

Being such a prissy prick is a threat to national security. WHEN Al Qeda screws with our food supply, you will become a drain on resources (actually, you will die). If out of date milk is the worst thing that you ever swallow, you will live a pampered life, but I doubt that it will be a long one. You ain't getting any of my food, that's for damn sure. Toughen up.

BTW, you can eat the worst-smelling, bloated piece of road kill as long as you cook it to 180 degrees. The food doesn't kill you, the bacteria does. You wouldn't be here if your ancestors thought like you do.

the use by date is an industry standard. But typicaly it is still useable for a few more days. If it gets chuncky or smells the least bit sour pitch it.

smell the milk, if it still smells good, take a taste. if not, you pour it out. i have had milk go over the date by 7-10 days.

i dont mind drinking it if it's only 1 or 2 days past. but the date is how fresh it'll be if the cap has never been open. it loses a lot of it's freshness once you open it.
