I am starting a bartending job this week. I never bartend but I did go to ABC Bartending 2 years ago. A local bar is giving me an opportunity to try out this week....along with memorizing drink mixs, what else do I need to do to prep myself and when I arrive there in terms of setting up what should I look for; basic bar rules (things to look for), etc?? Thanks!

The easy part is learning to make drinks. The hard part is learning to multi-task at a busy bar. Always set the bar up so you do not have to run off to grab something you forgot. This should take you a couple of weeks to learn (you have to figure out where stuff is and how much you will need for a busy night. I'm sure they'll provide training).

This stuff will include stocking liquor and beer, cutting lemons and limes, cleaning and stocking glassware, and cleaning the bar area.

Look for signs of people being over-intoxicated. Bars and restaurants are now held libel for any customer getting drunk in their establishment and causing an accident. In some states, the bartender can be fined. Know when to cut people off.

Be careful not to over-pour. Lots of nightclubs and restaurants hire spotters to go into the bars and pretend they are customers. They look for bartender over-pour and theft. You could lose your job if caught. Always use the measuring instruments they provide for you, even when it gets really busy and hectic.

Also, work on your customer service skills. This job brings in a lot of rude and irritating customers. Bartenders with great personalities and people skills are tipped well. Know and learn how to handle troublemakers. Your boss will inform you of the company polices in regard to this.

Know how to talk to people so they feel at home (even when you don't want to talk to them).

Know when a person is drunk and needs to be cut off.

Know a real ID from a fake ID.

Those are three good starters.
