I tried to pick up my dog just after she died, and I could hardly pick her up to move her. Is there something physiological that happens during the decaying process to make them heavier?

No, but when you pick up a dog (or person) when they are alive, they use their muscles to stay rigid, and it helps you lift them. When you are lifting the same weight that is limp (like a dead animal, or a flour sack or something) then it's harder.

I am sorry for the loss of your dog. :(

It is not only for animals but for human as well. Dead bodies does not have the flexibility of a life one. The hard body gives it a heavier weight

My Dog died two weeks ago. I had to lift her up to get her on a cart. She did not seem heavier. Just that since she was not in a standing position made it harder. I had to lift her wraped in her blankets. About 95 lbs.
