CT scan may show a mass though there is no way to know if it is cancerous. If a mass is present then a biopsy must be done. A biopsy is a procedure where a needle is inserted into the mass (usually under ultrasound guidance) and some cells from the mass are extracted. These cells are sent to the lab where a pathologist examines them and determines whether they are benign or malignant. The biopsy gives a definitive diagnosis of cancer and what type of cancer it is.
Hope this is helpful.

CT Scan and biopsy. Sometimes they can do a needle biopsy and just remove a tissue sample or a surgical biopsy to remove a lymph node is the course of action. In the case of my sister, it was a surgical biopsy which revealed cancer of an unknown primary. In other words the biopsy confirmed cancer but could not confirm the exact type. Further tests were necessary.

Not all cancers can be seen on an x-ray, but a ct scan can usually see cancers. It's much more reliable.
