The book is much more anti-organized religion than the movie, the book is especially anti-catholic.

I don't really care, honestly. I'm not going to watch it, mostly because fantasy movies do NOT appeal to me at all. Does it promote atheism? I would have to watch it to really know, even though the author of the books that the movie is based upon is an atheist and promotes atheism in his books. But, honestly ... couldn't care less, so I'm not in the "controversy", I suppose.

I don't know. Were you upset when all those people were murdered after cartoons of Mohamed were printed in the newspapers? Probably not. You probably had excuses for the Muslims bad behavior. How many people have Christians murdered in response to the Golden Compass movie?

Um, because it talks about KILLING God...that's insulting. Listen, atheist friend, that's great that you have no belief and you think this life is as good as it gets, but dont insult ME and people who hold God sacred because you want to be entertained. It's sickening. As for you being the minority and having to live in a faith based country, deal with it or move somewhere else - people are sick of "compromising" their own values under the premise of "tolerance" - please. The Golden Compass is disgusting.

the books are explicitly anti-God. the golden compass movie is a little lighter on the God-killing but the makers have said in the movie sequel(s) there will be a clearer anti-religion message. Christians are concerned their kids will pick up the books and be influenced by the whole "death to God" message.
and atheists can have their movies, sure.. no one banned it or anything...

Personally, I think some people can't handle criticism of their faith at that level, let alone debate what they believe. And for many Christians, perhaps it's best that "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so." That's all they need, and maybe they shouldn't see the movie.

God, if he existed, should be able to take care of himself, but deep down Christians know that god doesn't really exist and they are simply communicating with their own subconscious fears, desires and prejudices. Thats why works of fiction ruffle their feathers so much - They're worried they'll be exposed as the delusional fanatics they are.

The movie is a flop according to box office standards. Maybe, it's just not that good of a movie? Or maybe, the Christian voice is stronger than we realize?

Not all Christians are upset by this. Only those who are insecure in their beliefs and afraid that exposure to something non-Christian may "trick" them into losing their faith.
Oh, yea of little faith...
