I'm getting married in June so we are going to take a mini-honeymoon to north of us. Then in the winter we are going to go some where warm! (we live in wisconsin)

I just started a job this past July and earn ONE vacation day a month. I have 3 so far, by June I should have about 9. Not enough.

In July, my fiance's family takes a trip to canada for 10 days, which I would LOVE to go of course because we'll be newly weds.

Can I ask at work if theres unpaid time I can have?

Does anyone have any knowledge about how that works? I LOVE my job and plan on staying there forever and they are so easy going with changing times I work, but I'm full-time so as long as each week I get 37.5-40 hours they don't care.

I was THINKING maybe I would go part time and then my vacation days would be covered but I'm not sure thats an wise option

How much time is your job giving you unpaid?

I guess also any tips how to go about (asking HR or my manager) this would be great!

All you need to do is ASK....seriously, if it's not in a manual. If they are that easy-going, then they may say yes. Tell them you are just asking on the chance they'll say yes and if they say no....then don't go. If they are that easy-going, you're probably okay. Tell them you don't want to jeopordize your job because it means a lot to you --- I can assure you, they'll appreciate your honesty.

It seems to me if you switched to part-time you would actually accrue LESS vacation time, not more, so keep your full-time position.

In any case you might want to approach your boss and say you know you have not accrued enough time but you would like an "advance' on future vacation time. So you would get the 5 extra days early, but later, when you have actually 'earned' them, they would already be gone. Or you can ask for the time off with no pay - a leave of absence. A leave of absence can usually be for two or so weeks, but any longer and your boss would have to arrange for subsititute help. 1. Go to your manager and say ... "I'm getting married soon and would like to know how I can go about getting enough time off to go on a honeymoon. We are planning to go away for two weeks and I am only going to have nine days available. I realize that part of this would be considered unpaid. Is this something you can help me with?"

If you're manager says he/she can't ..... ask if there is an objection to your contacting your Human Resources are to see if something can be worked out.


If you work somewhere that won't work with you on something like this ..... they don't deserve to have you as an employee. (Sorry!)

The big thing is to TALK to your manager as soon as possible - be humble and ASK him/her to help!
