Hi,
I am a dcotor..
Statins are a group of drugs which are widely used to reduce cholesterol..
There are currently 6 statins on the market:
atorvastatin (Lipitor)
fluvastatin (Lescol)
lovastatin (Mevacor)
pravastatin (Pravachol)
simvastatin (Zocor)
rosuvastatin (Crestor)
A seventh statin, cerivastatin (Baycol) was removed from the market during the summer of 2001 because of potentially serious side effects.
What Are the Common Side Effects of Statins?
The most common side effects of the statins are gastrointestinal -- nausea, gas, upset stomach. Less common are headache, dizziness, rash, and sleep disturbances (sleep disturbances appear to be more common with atorvastatin and simvastatin.)
Statins cause elevations in liver enzymes in 1 of 100 patients. While blood tests should be checked after a few weeks of treatment, there is little evidence that statins ever cause serious or permanent liver damage.however, if the liver enzyme level goes more than 3 times normal and keeps persistently high, then the drug needs to be stopped. otherwise, it can be continued..
Statins cause a muscle disorder producing muscle weakness, and occasionally pain, in 1 of 1,000 patients. If muscle destruction is widespread, kidney failure and death can result.
An exaggerated and potentially fatal form of this muscle disorder is the reason cerivastatin (Baycol) was removed from the market.
Rosuvastatin was also seen to cause the severe form of muscle disorder, but only with the 80 mg dose (doses up to only 40 mg are approved.)
Rosuvastatin also was reported to cause a poorly-explained kidney disorder in some patients with the 80 mg (unapproved) dose.

since first being prescribed statins 12 years ago, besides the muscle aches, ocular migraines, etc., I also developed REM behavioral sleep disorder. The sleep expert only gave me muscle relaxers which did not remedy the symptoms in the least. He and the cardiologist at this time are both fired.

I'm taking Vitorin, and I don't notice any. OTOH, I don't know if they're doing any good either.
