The answerers who simply say He was just a carpenter because Jospeh was are missing something....

...as if He weren't the great I AM He claimed to be, who humbled Himself and became man. As if He were not sovereign over what Joseph's profession was. As if He wasn't sovereign over who would be His earthly parents.

In other words...
Sure, He was a carpenter because Joseph was a carpenter...but why was Joseph a carpenter? And why did Jesus choose Joseph as His step-father?

Not a single word of the Bible is in vain, and has more significance then we could imagine, though not neccessarily the significance men do imagine.

Know this: Jesus chose to be a carpenter before the earth was even created, long before carpentrary was even a trade, and much longer before Joseph's great-great-great-great-grandparents were even born.

Jesus is the Word of God, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us full of grace and truth.

There is tremendous spiritual significance behind Jesus being a carpenter...

Just as a carpenter builds things, the whole universe was created through Him. And just as a carpenter repairs things that are broken, and restores them, Jesus spiritually restores broken people (sinful), and restores them (reconciles them) to the Father as the one Mediator between man and God. For salvation is by grace through faith in Him, and is found in no other and by no other way. He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father but by Him.

A very quick internet search just now, and I was blessed by this sermon, regarding Jesus the Carpenter:

Jesus was "More Than a Carpenter", of course, and I highly recommend any non-Christian to pick up the short, easy-to-read, inxpensive book by Josh McDowell with this title. It can be found and purchased here:

Actually the whole carpenter thing is a mistranslation of The bible.

The Greek word Tekton can mean any of the following
1) a worker in wood, a carpenter, joiner, builder

a) a ship's carpenter or builder

2) any craftsman, or workman

a) the art of poetry, maker of songs

3) a planner, contriver, plotter

a) an author.

Also he is the shaper of the cosmos so creativity would seem to come naturally to him.

He came as a Carpenter, Father God says I knew you before you were there, Besides that poor people Builds, Jesus came to the poor and afflicted, came on there level live the life as a Man without, this is a good way to get people to lesson to you.
You have not alot or nothing as they dont, and even know as alot of people is without, but a carpenter knows how to put things together and make things work, it's a job being at the bottom, Gods Word grows in us and Manifest itself through love, mercy and we Learn to lean on Jesus, through him we we more power over evil and anything we can and will experience.
So the priciple is the same we Build and Grow Stronger in God, and through Jesus Holy Holy Holy is he that sit on the thrown forever more.

hi! I think Jesus chose to be a carpenter because they create. And Jesus created the world. Out of love so he most likely chose to be a carpenter because of his love of creating things beautiful. GREAT QUESTION!!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!

Nope, Joseph was a carpenter and in almost all cases the son did what the father did. Even though Joseph was not his father , he honored him.

It's a show of humility. Carpenters' work was middle-class back in those days. It demonstrates his acceptance of mediocrity, even though he was God in the flesh.

He was in his father's trade. He obeyed his parents and did what he was taught. He wasn't any higher than any other villager. He was a king, but not a rich one. He was rich with love and God.
