My poor little TV... we have only had it for a few years, but it started doing this weird thing about a week ago. The entire screen would go black except for a thin horizontal line right in the middle of the screen. It would do that then go back to normal, and flicker back and forth, but eventually calm down. But now when I turn it on it goes to the horizontal line for about three seconds and turns itself off. I have to unplug the TV to get it to even turn back on again, but it keeps turning itself back off. In short, my TV is possessed. Other than hiring an exorcist, is there anything that I can do to save my TV, or is it time to break down and buy a new one? Thank you for your advice!

Probably has the vertical output shot. The biggest cost to fixing televisions these days is labor. Sounds like it recognizes its own problem and is going into shut-down mode.

A technician can probably fix it easily, but by the time you figure labor, parts, your time taking it in, etc., you're probably better off getting a new one. Or a used one!

Same thing happened to my dad's TV. He called around, and yes, that problem is reparable, but depending on how expensive the TV is, it probably isn't worth it. Basically there's a small part in there (sorry, can't remember if it's a resistor, diode, or whatnot) that's loosened up and either needs to be replaced, or re-soldered. You could always call a repair center, and get an opinion over the phone to get a rough idea what the cost would be. It's not a terribly un-heard of problem.

The vert amp chip needs re soldering ! This is a very common fault and easy to fix , Get an estimate for the repair or enlist the help of some one who has average brain power and knows how to use a soldering iron !

Probably the bulb needs replacing. Fixing a tv will cost the same as buying a brand new one. It's not worth it to send it in for repairs.

It's DEAD. If you want to buy a new television, though, please be aware that you can find a good SDTV (the new ones are HDTV) for very little money, but after January 2009 you will have to have an 'HD converter' to get any signal for it. If you don't have a lot of cash, the SDTV and the 'converter' are lots less expensive, but the picture quality won't be nearly as good.

Buy a new one . The way t.v.'s are made now it will cost you just as much to fix it as to buy a new one. Wal-Mart or Fry's electronics has cheap new ones. But you may want to think about the H.D. since I think 2009 they are planing on changing everything to H.D. Good Luck !!
