What kind of hope does it give atheists to believe there is nothing more to their existance than life and death? And if they truly believe this, why does it bother them so much that some people choose to believe in God? Just a question to get atheists thinking...

It doesn't bother me at all what people want to believe in - if it makes them happy, I'm all for it.

The fact that there is no existence beyond this one doesn't bother me either. It's great to be alive and living in harmony with the earth.

although i'm not athiest i'll give you what i think... to be honest i'm not too sure about whether or not there is life after death, but it wouldn't bother me one bit if there was nothing left after this... i live my life to the fullest and enjoy every moment of it...

"why does it bother them so much that some people choose to believe in God?"
in some, but definitely not most, cases i think it goes both ways... SOME people who believe in god are constantly trying to convert, shove beliefs down throats, and tell athiests they are going to hell... on the other hand you find SOME athiests telling people that believe in god that they have no logic and are stupid

but i have never run into this problem with any athiest because i show them respect and they show me respect... they don't mind one bit that i believe in god

Why would it diminish hope for things to come just because we are mortal?

The believing does not bother anybody, it is the nut-bar actions of too many believer that is bothersome.

You need to think thing through. That is what education is all about; the ability earned to ask better question.

It makes us (well at least myself) try to make my life here on Earth really mean something and make a positive difference for someone rather than spend my whole life striving for a better afterlife for just myself (seems kind of selfish right?). It doesn't bother me that people believe in God, however, it does bother me when people try to change my beliefs. I don't think your question is really "just to get atheists thinking" as much as it is trying to set us up into realizing we are totally wrong and change our beliefs immediately. Answering questions such as these reaffirms to myself that I am heading in the right direction.

Hope is irrelevant. I could hope to be able to fly by flapping my arms; it won't work, which is why I own an airplane. The problem with religion is not simply that it is useless (which it is), but is in fact maleficent: people waste billions of dollars on it, for no good effect, and it is a corruption of logical thought. Since logic is the key to survival of the species, it should be obvious that this is a very bad thing indeed. See:

It's wonderful to feel that you want to do a good deed simply because you want to do it, and not because some invisible sky daddy is going to punish you if your not good.
Knowing that there is no after life makes you want to do more with your current life.

I am not bothered by the fact that you believe in a god. However, I am bothered when "you" tell me I have to obey the rules of your religion or dumb down science because it conflicts with "your" religion.

It gives no hope whatsoever, hope for an afterlife is an illusion.

I don't care what people choose to believe, but as has been posted here thousands of times, when people use that belief to justify taking away my rights as a US citizen, then that drives me crazy.

The fact that something gives no hope doesn't mean there is no truth in it

It dosen't bother me that they believe in god except that a lot of them try to use it to control people. That's wrong . Also it just dosen't have a place in the modern world .It's about as outdated as believing the earth is flat. Do you believe in Hercules and Zeus What differentiates any religion from those myths?

Religion was invented to get people to fight wars.

I believe in a "Higher Power" (used to be Catholic) but I'm not shoving it onto others. I don't want anyone's organized religion presiding over my life. That includes the government and people trying to "save" me. My relationship with my Higher Power is exclusively between me and my Higher Power. It has nothing to do with what happens to me when I die, but more about what goes on in my daily life. I guess I'm a 'theist'.

The question should really be: Why do the religious have or need hope for something that reason tells us cannot and will not happen? Atheists, surely, just accept reality as it is, without the need for wishful thinking.
