Is is necessary to get driving lessons from a professional driving instructor before you take your driving test?

There are good reasons to take lessons from a professional Driver Training Instructor. Learning to drive safely is not as straightforward as one might think. If the person teaching you is not a trained instructor, sometimes you may:
"learn wrong information or pick up unsafe habits, or
gain a false sense of confidence of your knowledge and/or ability"

The second answer is good. Anytime you are over the age of 18, you need not prove you ever took a class. It only applies to when your in h.s. school. Your insurance company may cut you some slack if you did take a professional course. But weigh the cost of the class vs. how much you would save on the insurance. Sometimes to save $100/yr on the insurance & then to have taken a $500 course may not be the best choice. A pro teacher can show you how to drive, but it's all about practice, practice, practice. I've been driving a semi for years now. I was shown how to shift, merge, & basically everything, but when it came down to it, it was all about me developing good habits. Stay off the phone, always use a turn signal, slow down, etc... G'luck

Varies by state law. Some still require formal training for minors.
I personally believe it should be required for all. Too many are now learning bad habits from family members, thinking that is the way it should be done. For instance, your dad thinks it is OK to be an amature proctologist while behind someone. You learn by watching his following distance that this is OK. You get into an accident and get faulted for following too closely, but you were at the distance he taught you. This accident could have been prevented if a competant instructor had told you to "back off" and you paid attention.

It's in your best interest to take driving classes from a professional instructor because with the certificate you will receive for completing the course, you qualify for a reduced auto insurance premium - every year. You also be better prepared for the written and driving exams.

It depends on the state. Here in Maryland it is required that you go to a "profesional" Driving School.

Yes, Unless you are 18. Then you can go to th eDMV and take the test whenever you want.
