Hook up the positive first and then the negative and make sure the amp is turned OFF before connecting or disconnecting it. When disconnecting, remove the negative lead first.

I've seen this on most cars with large sound systems. It's because there is a capacitor in the amp storing the power. Just hook the battery back up and let the spark happen. I always make sure that the battery cables don't get hot just in case there may be something else wrong. I've seen way too many customers cars with the huge positive cables they have installed themselves, run through the front door weather strips by the door hinges, with no fuse in line at the battery. Just a matter of time before they have a melt down from the door rubbing through the cable! It's better to run the cable through the firewall at a grommet that is already there for a cable or wiring loom.

Disconnect the ground negative to the amp. Hook the power positive lead first. then hook the ground negative to a good earth connection.
