I think it has really gotten carried away. I would appreciate just a note saying that they were praying for me during Christmas. But, I have also received unexpected amounts of money also. God knows how to supply our needs and gives us our desires. I wanted to get my kids something little, but did not have the money. I did get a gift card from my employer and another gift card from an employee. I really needed it also, because I had bills that I did not expect either. He is just is so good to me. I like to give gifts all year long, so Christmas is not that special in that way for me. I think that most people are really giving gifts from their heart, which is good for everyone to do. I am sure that God is pleased with that. I don't think He wants us to overspend or go into debt over it though. This will be a never ending debate. We will continue it next year about this time.

Regarding the choice of December 25 as the date for celebrating Christmas, The Catholic Encyclopedia for School and Home says: "This was the day which had been dedicated in pagan Rome to the feast of the sun god and had been called Birthday of the Unconquered Sun.” In connection with Christmas customs, we read: “Gift-giving, the Yule log, and mistletoe, are Christianized versions of ancient Roman, Germanic, and Celtic lore.” They are rooted in paganism.

Why shouldn't Pagans celebrate Christmas?
Christmas started out as a Pagan celebration of Ule Tide. That's where the yule log came from, and from then on it was perverted by Christianity because many Pagans transferred their beliefs into Christianity, and hence.. Christmas.
It's common knowledge that Jesus' birth very well probably wasn't even NEAR Christmas, but since we don't really know it's very hard to make that judgement..
Christmas is, in any event, more of a time to celebrate love and happiness and joy, but it's being constantly perverted by consumerism bullshit- it gets worse every year, as you've no doubt seen unless you never leave your home.

I consider these two separate days. First of all, I celebrate the memory of the birth of Christ and what that means to me.
Secondly, we do give gifts for another important reason. As a mom, I enjoy watching the delight on my children's face when they open their presents. As a Christian, while we are not told to commemorate Christ's birth, we celebrate with gifts for one another to show love, caring, sharing, and compassion - all reasons why Christ came to earth as an infant.

Because it is a tradition of following along with what happened on the day Jesus was born. When Jesus was born he was brought gifts and good tidings. Christians celebrate that day by offering each other their own gifts and good tidings.

People do it because we are following the example in the Bible. We are giving gifts because Jesus birth was celebrated w/ gift giving.Christmas is the celebration of the birth of our Lord/Saviour Jesus Christ.

Well because we are supposed to give and share. Celebrating Christmas is not a sin, even if it may not be the actual birth date. What difference does it make what day we choose to do it? The important thing is where our focus is.

We celebrate Christmas because we want to celebrate the day that God gave us His only Son to be a sacrifice. We give gifts to symbolize the gift that God has given us. Despite our active rebellion, and hatred towards God, He unconditionally gave His Son to die as a substitutionary death so we could be set free. What a great gift. So we give gifts at Christmas to symbolize the gift God gave to us.

I've always wondered that.
I think the devil has gotten everything turned around
Nothing wrong with giving gifts to each other, but how does the one with the birthday feel, if you bring a present for everyone at the party, but not him

I'm agnostic and I celebrate x-mas. It's just fun. I was blissfully unaware of the whole jesus=christmas thing until I was much older. Why can't everyone just have a nice holiday? :]
