As it says two sticks or 1/2 pound. If you've ever bought butter or margarine it comes in a 1 pound box of four sticks. Two sticks are also equal to 8 ounces or one (1) cup. What i have found extremely helpful in baking is a bartenders measuring glass. They have all the different measurements, ounces, teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, etc. around the glass. It's especially great for those measurements such as 1 Cup + 1 Tablespoon. They're available at places like BED BATH & BEYOND.

2 sticks of butter does equal 1 cup which is 1/2 of a pound. It seems to be written so that if you have a ound of butter (a whole slab) then you cna just weigh for the correct amount.
