You've got the pasta right; but if you melt cheese on it then the result will be greasy, messy, and unappetizing.
You need to make a cheese sauce. You'll need a small- to medium-sized pan, preferably with a heavy bottom. For four servings:
Preparation:
- Shred about 2/3-cup to 3/4 cup of cheddar or other cheese. Set aside.
- Warm about 1 cup of milk (skim, full fat, whatever) in the microwave or in a separate pan. Set aside.
Making the sauce:
- Place pan on burner and turn heat to Medium
- Melt about 2 Tablespoons of butter in the pan
- Blend in 2 Tablespoons of flour
- Cook 1 to 2 minutes or until the mixture browns and starts to smell slightly nutty. Keep stirring or it'll burn.
- Lower the heat a bit, to somewhere between Medium and Minimum. (Gotta be careful with milk and cheese, they both burn easily.)
- Slowly pour in a small amount of the milk. Blend with the flour mixture. Then add the rest of the milk. (This is how you avoid making floury lumps in the sauce.)
- Cook, stirring, until the mixture thickens. This shouldn't take more than 5 or 10 minutes.
- Finally, blend in the cheese.
Remove immediately from the heat. Stir in the cooked pasta. Serve.

No, no, no. Don't worry, it's very easy to make once you try.
Take a cup of milk and a cup of broth (if you have it, it's not strictly necessary - you can just use 2 cups of milk). Heat it on the stove. To make it taste better, add a dash of black pepper or a teaspoon of mashed garlic at this point.
Once the milk is hot (foaming at edges), take a tablespoon of cornstarch and mix it with two tablespoons of cold milk in a separate bowl. Then add this soupy mix to the warm milk on the stove. Stir, keeping the pot on low heat, until it thickens.
Remove this 'white sauce' from the stove. This is important, so the sauce doesn't get grainy. Add a cup of shredded cheddar and stir, stir, stir until the cheese melts in.
Congratulations! You now have proper cheese sauce for your mac & cheese!

here's what i do:
cook pasta,
take a cream soup (your favorite will do, I use campbell's cream of mushroom)
mix in a can of milk (just like the soup instructions say) and heat up
then I mix in 2+ cups of shredded cheese untill melted, I then pour over the cooked pasta.
Stop there if you don't want to bake, I like it this way too.
I usually top with bread crumbs more shredded cheese and durkee's french fried onions and bake for 20 or so minutes at 350 degrees.

There are different ways to make mac and cheese. That sounds like it would work. You may need to put it in a heat safe dish and put it under the broiler and some people add a little milk in the cheese.
Be sure to drain it before adding the cheese.

Boil the macaroni, drain, and add one can of cream of cheese soup(Campbells), some grated cheese, a little mustard, salt and pepper. Heat to melt everything and there you go!!!! You could leave the mustard out if you want-it just adds a little zing! When I say heat everything, I mean in the same pan on top of the stove!!

Sounds about right, but add a teaspoon of salt to the water while boiling the pasta, and then add a little milk and butter with the cheese afterwards. But you have to mix it in fast, while the noodles are still really steaming hot!

A quick no-bake mac-n-cheese: i takes 2 pots, one for the pasta, cooked to al dente like you said. The other is for a quick cheese sauce. 1 cup of whole milk brought to a slow simmer. add 1 cup of shredded cheese (your choice). add shredded cheese to milk and stir until creamy. Pour over drained pasta and mix well so that all pasta is coated with cheese sauce. top with handful of extra shredded cheese and mix in until gooey. salt and pepper and enjoy

yeh, boiling it in water then adding it to the macaroni drained is good but you can also boil it in milk and add the cheese with the milk. another choice is to boil the macaroni in the water, drain the water, boil it for a little more time in milk then add the cheese. don't forget the butter, salt, accent, and pepper.
mac expert* trust
my maman and marrian make it by boiling it in water, draining it until it's dry, setting it in a tray, adding carnation milk, a stick of butter, salt, accent, pepper, a dash of maggi, a dash of parsley, then packages cheese as well as grated cheese. just remember you got that from lucien & estime ;]
