What is an education, and what it is not...
An education is what you get by living life, and learning from many people, and varied sources.
You acquire it by doing; gaining experience.
We can read about a lot of things, and this certainly contributes to an education, since it may spark our interests, and curiosity about new things, however an education is not, as many think simply a product of formal schooling.
All one has to do is look at the teaching method most often used today, called guided learning/discussion.
This is a method of instruction with a desired learning outcome/objective.
It is a scripted discussion about a topic where the instructor is looking for an anticipated response to his/her predetermined question(s).
Such a script (textbook) actually tells them what answers to expect, and the questions are worded in a manner that leads to these anticipated answers.
If students do not answer in the manner that is expected the instructors are not allowed to deviate from said scripts to explore other avenues, often in the interest of time, or because they may not know how to teach beyond the prepared lessons.
So much for a free flowing discussion that facilitates real learning/thinking.
It teaches someone what to think rather than how to think; stifling natural curiosity, and creativity.
Being able to think outside the box is what leads to a true education.
What is education; free thinking, and free flowing discussions.

m-w.com defines it as the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process. Very vague.
Really education is learning - and this happens in school, at home, in banks, in nature, in stores, and well - basically everywhere. There is no set place to learn.
Education is growing up and growing old.
With each stage we have a new kind and form of education.

To put it succinctly, education is the acquisition of knowledge which enables one to sustain oneself and learn on their own. A teacher can give a student no greater gift than to equip them with the tools enabling them to do without the teacher. Once a student discovers that he or she can acquire new knowledge without the assistance of others, then the sky is the limit.

Education doesn't have an exact definition. It's more of gaining more experience and knowledge. Every single day you live you gain more knowlege about life and therefore, more experience. Every single second you are being educated.
