August is the time to go north . The north of western australia has a spectacular coastline - The Kimberley .

One of the better way to see it is to sail along the coast . The Leeuwin will give you the experience of sailing a tallship and at the same time view the beautiful coastline between Broome and Darwin. (That's if you are into sailing ).

Further down from Broome is the Port Hedland -The Pilbara Region . One can fly to Port Hedland and explore the region .

Below that is the Ningaloo Reef which is a Marine Park . You can explore the coral reef via scuba diving or snorkelling . Also plenty of surfing and other water activities.

Ok, this trip won't be warm, BUT, if you are a train enthusiast, try the Indian Pacific train. From Perth, about 3 days to Adelaide. You can have several days stopover in Adelaide, then catch the train to Sydney.
Now, it is not cheap. If you want to have a sleeper, the price will go up to 800 dollars or so, without discount (there are some discount available).
You will be crossing the Nullabor plain most of the time on the way to Adelaide, but Adelaide is a great city. Beautiful, and one hour bus will take you to the Fleurieau peninsula, beautiful beach. Or you can visit the winery. Adelaide is the base to visit many of AUstralian's most famous wineries.
The practical says that it is a waste of time, while train enthusiast thinks it is one of the GREATEST train journey in the world, and you get to meet other travellers on the train, and it is all good fun.
Having said that, August is the best time to visit Darwin and Alice Spring, although mind you flying from Perth to Darwin, then to Sydney won't be that cheap either.
ANyway, it all depends on what you want to do.

August in the tropics is touristy because it is the dry season and that's when the tourists go there. Darwin and Cairns both have great scenery and plenty to see and do. Cairns has the advantage of access to the Great Barrier Reef. Darwin is the gateway to Kakadu national Park.
If you are heading for either, stop in Alice Springs on the way to see Uluru. You will be surrounded by tourists but it is bigger than all the tourists piled on top of each other. It is awe inspiring and worth the trip

If your looking for more interesting things to do, you should go to Sydney. But if you want a beach vacation with a good view spend most of your time in Perth.
Hope this helps a bit = )
