Definitely cream cheese. Red velvet cake has very little flavor on its own, so I think a regular white frosting would make the cake seem very bland.

The best type of frosting to use on Red Velvet cake is Cream Cheese frosting, other recipes often call for a 7-Minute Frosting or even a White Confectioners Frosting. I found Cream Cheese frosting add a better taste to Red Velvet cake.

Either/or. The fluffy white frosting is great on it, too. Coconut frosting is great on red velvet cake and looks festive.

You can use either.
But I would use cream cheese, cuz cream cheese makes everything better.
