I am confused about the proofs of alcohol, so this might be an idiotic question, but considering the proofs of alcohol, would it be the same to drink one shot of an 80% proof alcohol (vodka) as drinking 8 drinks of something that is 10%? that sounds really wrong, so correct me and tell me what is right. I am not underaged I just don't drink that much and was wondering.

You do have it a little mixed up. Something that is 80% alcohol by volume would be 160 proof, 40% alcohol equals 80 proof.

But you are correct that drinking 8 ounces of 10% would be the same as 1 ounce of 80%. (Just that percent and proof are not the same thing.)

ETA: It's funny how there aren't any answers when I start to compose mine and suddenly there are a whole bunch! LOL!

Proofs Of Alcohol

Drop the % when you put proof in there. What the proof means is that 100 proof equals 50% alcohol by volume. So an ounce of 80 proof (or 40%) and 8 ounces of 10 proof (or 5%) would be the same quantity of alcohol consumed.

Vodka that is 80 proof (not 80% proof) is 40% alcohol. You won't find 10 proof vodka, but 10 proof translates to 5% alcohol, so yes, you would get the same amount of alcohol in your system by drinking eight drinks of 10 proof as drinking one drink of 80 proof.....If your intention is to get drunk, go with the 80 proof - if you don't like the bite of alcohol, stay with the lesser proof, and you will eventually get to the same point. If you are really adventurous, try some grain alcohol mixed with some fruity drink....it's 190 proof !

80 proof actually means 40% alcohol. one shot of 80 proof is equal to a 12oz glass of beer, which is usually about 5% alcohol. now I'm not a mathematician but i think 8 drinks of 10% would equal about 16 shots of vodka
