insist with walking/running on the road even in the presence of a perfectly good sidewalk. It confounds me, am I not seeing something??

just so you know, the sidewalks where I live are well maintained, wide, new, and all the runners/walkers are on the road anyway. and all the cyclists are on the road as well.

Why?
Because they can.
Because they think it is OK.
They think they are above law.
They think accident happen to only other people, they are above it, it will not happen to them.
Cyclist belong on special allocated portion of the road or on the road. They do not belong on the side walks. This is by law in most location.
You are correct about runner, walkers and joggers, they are pedestrians and belong on the side walks or walkways.
I almost ran over one as the walker came out from behind a parked car in my path and both of us did not see each other, until the last few seconds, I was able to avoid the accident by making a quick available move, but that type of move can cause yet another misshape. All parties were very lucky. After a while I turned around to warn the walker, not to do that and use the walkway. The people had just no Idea, about what I was saying. They just looked at me, implying "mind you own business moron who are you to tell me any thing you do not own the road". Few days latter I saw them again on the road.
I have even informed the police, suggested they hand out reflective ribbon to be used, so driver can get some hint about some ones present on the road.
At best they are "Jay Walking". Most cities have law against this activity, but it is enforce some times in the downtown areas only and for the people who cross, out side the assigned crossing places or cross when the crossing lights are red.

Concrete (for sidewalks) is 10 times harder than asphalt (the thing on roads). That makes a huge difference. Obviously you're not seeing it from the point of view of someone who runs. So what if there are other sports? Ever thought that maybe people run because they LIKE running cross country/track?

Depends on how busy the pavement is. Sometimes it is risky to try and run among walkers.
I have to run in the road because of all the stupid cyclists who ride on the pavement getting in my way.
Sometimes pavements are not maintained as well as roads and the risk of triping is great. Not nice.
Apart from that, maybe just habit, due in part to the above.

Because there are more things to trip over or run into on the sidewalk, and believe it or not, asphalt is a slightly less hard surface than concrete, so it's slightly easier on the joints.
You might be surprised to see, in just one mile on the sidewalk, how many double-strollers, people with dogs, people on skateboards, mailmen, etc. you encounter on the sidewalk. Eventually, you just give up.

1. The sidewalk is made of concrete
2. The road is level and has no curbs that you have to step down then step up again at the intersections; and there are no downslopes for wheelchair access
Yes, you are not seeing the runner's point of view.

The concrete is a hard plac to run on, believe it or not. It gets sore on runner's feat and therefore the assfault is somewhat of a nice alternative.
And I don't think I spelled assfault right.

Concrete is the absolute worst surface for your body to run on. Maximum impact.

I agree with you. And they don't even observe the biker lane by running halfway out into traffic. Isn't it fun trying to time passing one of the slow inconsiderate runners while watching oncoming traffic?

asphalt is wayyyyyyyyyyy softer than concrete
Also.....cars don't see runners in crosswalks as well as on the street..
I know because I run 5x a week and have near misses at least 3 out of those 5 days.
