Simple fact: The first use was PURELY RELIGION, the Birth of Christ, only. See, you can't quite get more religious than that.
Now, somehow a TRADITION formed, where people would give others gifts for the holiday.
But, it takes money to buy the gifts, right? Which is why it seems more like a BUSINESS event nowadays.
You can't forget the real meaning of Christmas, though.

It's definitely a business event- it's basically become a celebration of 'LOOK WAHT I GOT IT COST 10x MORE THAN YOURS HAHAAH'..
On the other hand, it IS a religious holiday, even though it's been perverted by Christianity (See: This was a holiday first celebrated by the Pagans, not the Christians.), it's still got religious ties- both from Pagan standards and Christian standards.
But yeah.. It's basically best for businesses, and not so great for us human beings. :(

It is all three. The city/state/region country you live in and it's assumptions depends on how this is distributed. I've been in communities where it is entirely religious and family tradition. I've been in communities where it is entirely a material event. I've been in communities where the 3 are balanced or lopsided. Many blessings.

Today my daughter told me it's just an activity. But that's because she wanted to open a present tonight and I said no. We focus on Jesus on Christmas Eve and we do the present stuff on Christmas. She got mad so she said it was an activity.

The retail industry counts on the pre-Christmas splurge. Without it, the retail industry would collapse.
