Mormons wear longer underwear (the bottoms come to right above the knees and the top part covers the entire midriff and shoulder). They wear them to help remind them to wear modest clothing that does not reveal the stomach, too much cleavage, is too short, etc. They also wear it to remind them of a sacred covenant they perform in the temple. However this covenant is not usually done until the person is 18 or older (so a lot of Mormons DON'T have any "magic underwear" because there are many members are not adults). I don't think you are not required to wear the garments after you've had this covenant done... but most people choose to.
They aren't "magical" by any means. I like Gumby's comparison of the garments to that of the cross; they are just things people wear to remind them of their religion. Mormons aren't the only ones who wear "special" clothing; some Jewish men wear certain clothing (I can't remember exactly what it's called, forgive me... it's some robe looking thing they wear under their clothes though and I think it has tassels on it), some Muslims wear certain clothing, etc.

I am LDS, and I am wearing the garments right now. But I don't have to bathe in them... they do come off at appropriate times! And they are not in any way magic, nor meant to stop bullets or anything.
When we make covenants with Heavenly Father in the Temple we begin wearing garments for several reasons. They are a constant reminder of our promises, they ensure modesty since they are meant to be kept covered up, and they have symbolic meaning.
I don't wear mine as underwear - I wear regular underwear underneath, although I know many members don't. So for me they are an extra layer. (Fellow Mormons, this is permitted - I had it from the Matron at the Preston Temple.)
I love wearing garments. I live in the UK where it's usually cold so I like the warmth! They are very cheap to buy (much cheaper than other underwear) and are well made in some lovely fabrics, including one which is 9% lycra, and another which is really light and silky.

I'm going to assume that you asked this question more out of curiosity rather than to just be mean or insulting, but Gumby, Life is Beautiful, Astral, Sunnyanne, and KneeKnee all gave you some very direct and honest answers. There really isn't anything more to the garment than this. As Mormons, we wear our holy garments 'under' our clothing. Nuns and Priests wear their holy garment on the outside, as does most other religious practices. I have to admit that the overt curiosity about the garment (we don't call them underwear) puzzles me.

Garments, often called “Mormon underwear” by those unfamiliar with our beliefs, are a form of religious clothing used by some Mormons. In early adulthood, prepared Mormon men and women typically participate in the higher ordinances of the Mormon temple for the first time. During these ceremonies, they make sacred promises to God, including the promise to dedicate themselves to Him. The day these promises are first made is one of the most important days in the life of a faithful Mormon. From that day forward, Mormons wear their religious clothing underneath their “street closes” as a quite, inner reminder of the sacred promises made. Mormons don’t think of their garments as “underwear,” but rather a sacred reminder of their renewed dedication to God.
Mormonism is by no means the only religion that uses religious clothing as a symbol. Catholic clergymen have religious robes, protestant clergymen often use a distinctive “collar," Jews have their yarmulkes (skull caps), Muslim women wear the hijab, and the Sikh wear their turbans. I have even heard that some Orthodox Jews wear an undergarment with religions significance (the tzitzit), much like the Mormon garment.
Contrary to the allegations of many anti-Mormon bigots, Mormons do not believe that their garments are “magic.” They do not believe that garments necessarily “protect” them from physical injury. Garments serve only as a reminder of special promises made to God; because of this powerful religious symbolism, mocking the Mormon garment is a very offensive form of hate-speech.

Not all mormons wear it and it's not "magic". They are simply a reminder of covenants we have made. Only members who have gone through the temple (active adults) wear them. I consider it similar to people who wear a cross to remember Jesus or any other religious clothing. I made promises to God and wearing the garments helps me remember those promises. I'd rather not have something on the outside because then everyone I met would want to know about what I was wearing and it would be a pain to explain it to everyone, especially considering many would mock it.
Our underwear is not magic, nor is it bulletproof or anything else. It is a spiritual protection and reminder. It is not a physical protection.
BTW, this question has been asked a gazillion times, you could do a search and get far better answers than mine.
EDIT: We are allowed to take them off to shower, bathe, have sex, play sports that would require different clothing, swim, etc. It would be ridiculous to think we wear them all the time. Come on people. How would I have given birth to my 3 children wearing garments? Use some common sense.

It's nice to see someone who is concerned with the undergarments of Mormons. It's quite a nice change from the usual Mormon bashing. I hope they do have magical underwear. That would be pretty cool. And patentable should they ever find themselves in need of some extra money.

Its not Magical but to us it is sacred. There are anecdotal stories among Lds where those who have been wearing there Garments as we call them have been protected.
The Garments symbolize the Garments that were given to Adam when he was cast out of the Garden of eden. It acts as a spiritual shield to us and reminds us of the covenants that we have made in the temple.
Its not so weird when you think about it. Tibetans where maroon robes, Hare Krishna's were there special robes. Muslims were there special clothes. To us it is something sacred and only between us and the Lord.
Life is beautiful: The stipulation is to wear it through out our life. most interpret this to mean wear it 24/7. we shouldn't look for excuses not to wear the Garment. some people take it to extremes.eg only washing with a sponge so that they can continue to wear the garment or going swimming with there Garmets on. We are cautioned to use Common sense.

We call them garments. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, garments are worn beneath street clothing as a personal and private reminder of commitments to God. Garments are considered sacred by Church members and are not regarded as a topic for casual conversationThe blood was also sprinkled over the garments of the priests (), who then ate parts of the ram with bread, Aaron and his sons “eat[ing] those things wherewith the atonement was made” It is having one’s garments washed white with the blood of the Lamb. Even the apostles of old used garments and this underclothing

They do. An intrinsic explanation may be a more accurate one, though, so you should ask a mormon directly. Yeah, hopefully they will answer this post.

Gumby, Life is Beautiful, Sunnyann, and a few others have it right on. I like my "magical" underwear, no wedgies anymore.
We don't bathe in them...
My hubby calls it the "S" rule,
Shower, Sports, Swimming, Seducing ones' Spouse, the result of Seducing ones' Spouse, etc. Of course there are others, but its our general rule of explanation.
